Can the IRS be aligned in an hangar?

Fri Mar 05, 2021 3:09 pm

If so, what can't be done in hangar other than starting up the engines? I heard WX radar is also harmful to people around when used in closed spaces.

Sure. The earth still spins under a hangar.

Yes, and it's also required for quite a few procedures. WX radar can be tested with the area in front of it blocked off.

GPS can be a bit annoying to do inside, as it fails the ADS-B test without a fix on both rx.

There’s a “repeater” GPS that uses an outside antenna and sends the GPS signals to the plane inside. Not sure how it works, but we had one in our hangar.

Yes, you can align the IRUs.

Yes, you can put the RADAR in test. The transmitter operates for less than a second. The rest of the test basically tests the interfaces and the sweep of the antenna. As I recall, the -Do not operate the weather RADAR warning in the hangar or near structures- is not applicable to the Test mode.

You can pretty much do just about anything else inside that you can do outside, unless the system requires an outside signal, and even then, the right test equipment, and you’re good. I guess VHF comm can be troublesome, but those transmitters are pretty powerful, and the tower (whom you will presumably be talking to) would be relatively close. I wouldn’t test HF inside either. A lot of radiated energy there and the building will interfere. In fact, I’m sure the AMM will have a prohibition against it.

Even being close to a hangar or large building while testing HF can be problematic at times.

HF can be problematic at all times.

Fixed that for you. ;)
