EU / UN "government fleets" ?

Fri May 21, 2021 6:17 pm

How are the travel needs of the heads of suprantional organizations like the UN the EU (e.g. the UN general secretary, the president of the EU Council, the president of the EU Commission or the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs) covered? I have not come across any "government aircraft" of such supranational organizations, but would find it surprising if those senior officals use scheduled flights all the time.

Many states have transport category aircraft for their government officials. The German "Flugbereitschaft" has some A340 that are being replaced by A350s. Other states have similar arrangements. Regarding the UN, the tend to lease the aircraft they need from different airlines. The UNHAS (United Nations Humanitarian Air Service) is provided by different companies and different aircraft types, depending on the needs of the specific mission.

Not sure how accurate this is, but for the European Commission looks like it is charter flights:

I am aware of these UN aircraft, but their are not used for transporting officials, but for specific humanitarian missions in various locations around the globe.

The UN would have a vast staff travel apparatus, mainly relying on private sector providers. $$

The EU often borrows aircraft from member states or travel together with heads of state/national delegations. The Belgian Air Component VIP fleet is often used for the job, and it is notably bigger than other countries of that size. Here's a photo of Donald Tusk stepping off one of the Belgian Embraers:

They also use chartered business jets.
