787 Paint adhesion issues

Sat Jun 12, 2021 5:56 pm

Recently KL sent PH-BHA to VCV to deal with apparent paint adhesion issues. More 789's within the KL fleet are suffering from this issues, you can spot them with various patches of speedtape on her wings. For window-seated pax, it might not be a reassuring view... :?

Do any other airlines have this issue as well?

Flight Radar has PH-BHA scheduled to do a flight on the 14th of June from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro

It’s a well known issue. Boeing says that UV Rays are weakening the paint cohesion.

I would have thought that if the QR 787's had this issue we would have heard about it publicly from AAB by now...

I’ve seen several AA787-8s with exactly the same issue using speed tape on the wings.

BA had one in Dublin recently for a wing paint repair, assume it was the same issue.

So should we expect the A350 to have the same issues?

And the A220, and the 777X?

The BA 789 fleet seem to slowly be making their way through SNN for wing repaints too.

Would this degrade airflow and affect performance?

Some UA 767s painted at VCV also had this problem.

I wonder to what degree wing flex contributes to this. The increased wing flex of a composite wing would definitely place more tension and compression forces on the paint, perhaps to the point of premature failure. Not sure if the 787 gets different type of paint (perhaps one with more flexibility?) than other aircraft models.

Do a search, the A350 has had it's issues already with the wing surface under the paint, doesn't mean every new aircraft will suffer from this, and i dont think it's a safety issue.

I've seen 787 wings unloaded from Dreamlifters that already appear painted white?
do the wings get another coat of paint when the rest of the plane is painted or is that the final layer?

Could it be a carbon wing issue?

Yes, the FAA link hayzel777 posted above indicates it is UV related damage to the resin. They don't state if it occurs prior to painting, or somehow through the paint.

They do mention a maintenance safety issue when using vacuum cups to attach fall arrest devices, but don't mention flight safety issues.

There has been recent discussion about paint issues with A350's, although it's not clear if they're related. I haven't seen anything about the CSeries paint so far, and of course, with the 777X not yet in service, there's probably not been a lot of opportunity to discover issues.
