United Basic Economy check-in Question

Sat Jun 19, 2021 9:29 am

This question is for those familiar with United's basic economy check-in process.

I'm trying to check in for my flight, but since I'm on a basic economy fare without any checked bags I have to check in at the airport (in Denver).

However, my origin airport isn't actually in Denver and I'm actually self-transferring in Denver from a different airline (Southwest). Will I be able to check in at the United gate or will I have to go through security again once I arrive in Denver?

I figured that I could just take the DEN train to connect from Concourse C to Concourse B, however, if I have to check-in at the front-lobby for my United flight then it sounds like I may need to clear security again. Thanks.

The basic economy rules clearly state that if you have only a small carry-on item, check in and seat assignment is made at the airport, so while a surprise for others it apparently poses no problem for you other than your TSA clearance question.
Print a copy of your UA flight information/confirmation and use the train transfer. The agent at the gate will assign a seat and print a boarding card.

There might not be anyone at the gate depending on how early the passenger arrives. Better to go to the United customer service desk at the concourse that the flight departs from and do the check-in there. No need to go landside.
As a UA FF I find this rule a little nuts but it's UA's way of enforcing their carry-on policy. They actually want to see the size of your carry-on before they give you a boarding pass so there are no arguments between F/A's and passengers once inside the plane. If your carry-on is too big to fit under the seat in front of you they'll make you pay for it before you even get to the gate.

Well as it turns out, my United flight out of DEN was canceled, so I'm stuck in Denver until tomorrow...
