BUF-BOS on DL A321 & Related Questions

Wed Nov 23, 2022 10:03 pm

I’ve noticed that BUF-BOS on Delta is an A321 daily as flight 2714, and it’s the only daily service DL does on this route (though usually half empty). Why don’t more routes use one large plane instead of 3 or 4 CRJs? I’ve always thought using 3 or 4 puddle jumpers as opposed to one A320/321 was a waste of resources (as CRJs aren’t very cost efficient). Airports like LGA would really benefit from fewer operations by using bigger planes…

Business flyers like frequency. Meeting ends early, jump on the early PM flight instead of the evening flight.

It's only on a 321 to get the plane out of BOS for the night, in order to not take up parking there.

Reminds me of the JFK-BDL (Hartford, Ct.) and JFK-PHL flights on 763ERs just to get the planes off of the JFK ramp.

Besides business frequency, hub banks are a thing. Sitting forever on a connection kinda sucks.

That said, this seems to be more of an efficiency thing for them to not pay to keep the A321 on the ramp

It might also be they just are out of space to keep the plane on the ramp in BOS for another overnight. A station like that can only accommodate maybe 15 mainline overnights. That's with every gate full and a bunch of remote parks. There are just so many remote parks to go around all the airlines.

Also all those overnights are required to have a minimum MTC check every night since BOS is a line mtc station. A out station like BUF doesn't require a check.

Passengers want frequency. If the airlines can fill up a 737 or A320 on 3-4 flights per day they would glady operate mainline, but on many routes they can't. A CRJ is only inefficient when you could have filled up a larger plane; if you can only sell 50 tickets a CRJ has a much lower trip cost than a 737.

In your situation specifically, as other posters have suggested, DL most likely needs a place to park their airplane overnight as the hubs are full. MDT is a good example of this with all 3 legacy carriers: The last flights in at night and the first flights out in the morning are all mainline jets while every other flight of the day is an RJ.

I can’t find the link at the moment, but there was an analysis showing DL, pre-COVID, was exceptional at matching plane size to passenger bookings. They knew how to fill the A320 on the early morning and evening flights, a CRJ 200 at noon bracketed by CRJ900s late morning and late afternoon, for example and much better than their competitors.

EDIT, found it.

No one ever mentions another factor: the value of the slots. NEUSA airports like BOS and LGA (generally speaking) command high fares/yields and are slot constrained. If you have unused slots, you lose them, the very last thing a carrier would want to do is lose slots. The slot is your franchise. Use of RJ's minimizes the cost of maintaining unprofitable slots while simultaneously keeping other carriers from getting them. The carriers lose some money on the margins to make a lot of money on the whole. When questioned, they make the "customers want frequency" argument.

Its less clear how they intend to maintain RJ's going forward in light of the lack of pilots at the regionals. They have started ab initio programs and have also greatly increased starting pay. It will be interesting to see how far they will continue to subsidize the baby pilots, but one can't discount the "value" of the virtue claiming accrued by subsidizing traditionally under represented groups.
