This is not correct. Santos’ ex-boyfriend was on CNN and claimed she shared a flat with Santos and a woman, who was his wife. How long did Republicans (Santos is a Republican, remember) have to make sure he had nothing horribly shady in his past? I know it does not matter when it is a Republican but they could have at least made an effort with their own candidate.

Okay. I misunderstood you. I thought you were referring to the Dems not knowing Santos was gay, not that those in the gay lifestyle may have known more about him.

A candidate being gay is meaningless. That is low hanging fruit. No one cares (except MAGAs). Republican handlers should have done their due diligence and checked out his education history and his work history and his financial history. He was their candidate. It was Republicans who should have known first and most.

If nothing else, this episode demonstrates what an incredibly low bar exists to be elected to Congress. Which is an example of unintended consequences.

When the Constitution was written, and the congressional eligibility requirements established, only a privileged segment of the population was able to vote. It would been reasonable back then to assume that voters would be well-informed, engaged, and competent to weed out bad candidates.

Flash forward to now, with universal suffrage, and the problem of “low information voters,” and we now have various buffoons, frauds, liars, and malcontents being elected to office.

It’s a victory for democracy but at a cost for responsible governance.
