World Airw. To Replace DC-10s/MD11s

Tue Feb 10, 2004 8:12 pm

News/rumour on justplanes today is that World Airways is going to replace its DC-10s as well as -surprisingly- MD-11s. The pax-aircraft with B767-300s, the freighters with 747s (no type and timeframe specified). I assume all secondhand, the 767s for sure as thats a shortterm plan.

justplanes.com?  Insane Let's just say, I'd be very cautious to believe what that particular site is publishing.  Smile

Yes they are replacing the DC10's with 767-300's but that's about as far as it goes. They're slated to acquire more MD11's this year from DL, 5 I believe.

Not such a far fetched rumor. A friend of mine who is a F/A supervisor at World told me they are looking at the 747.

according to a press realease on the WOA website, World will add 2 767-300ERs by years end. These will replace 2 DC-10's being returned to lessors (2 dc-10 freighters have been returned already). The company is also studying the feaability of adding 744sf to the fleet, no decision expected for some time.

MD-11's will probably be arounda while, but the DC10's are on the way out.

Does anyone have knowledge as to the source of these 767-300's? The same press release also states 2 more 767-300's will be added to the fleet in 2005.

What engine type, previous operator, and how will they be configured
(passenger capacity and 7 or 8 abreast)?

If they do get 767's , lets hope the get a new color scheme, something besides black, white and gray, I know they lease out some of their aircraft to other operators, but come on, lets get some color on there !

I listened to the conference call this past Monday and was surprised that this small charter outfit, with 17 to 18 planes, is even considering having 4 airplane types. Apparently they are keeping 2 DC-10 freighters for the foreseeable future (probably locked into a lease), getting 4 767-300ERs (for which they reportedly have business waiting) and are considering the 747-400 as a freighter. The MD-11 will remain their mainstay, both in pax and freighter configuration. In my opinion they would be better off if they just stayed with the MD-11 which is a comfortable niche for them. The military, their main customer, likes the pax version and the MD-11F is efficient and cost-effective for certain commercial customers. Four types among 17 to 18 planes costs a lot of $$$ in training and maintenance.

World does a lot of ACMI charters, and their spartan livery makes it easier to throw another airline's titles onto the a/c without having to worry about repainting the a/c. So I doubt that any livery change, if any would be major.
