on http://indian-airlines.nic.in/scripts/aboutus.aspx, Indian Airlines (IC) claims to have 2 Dornier D-228 aircraft.
After checking the aircraft database here on a.net, I am a little confused.. which aircraft are they referring to.. ? I am in the need of range and max pax, so any help is appreciated... thanks!

Hey, I think you are right.. these a/c operate to the Lakkadives (from Kochi), the flight is short and the airport small..

Anybody remember Vayudoot? (sic) Their fleet consisted of nothing more than Do-228s. They operated out of CCU to destinations in the northeast, I believe.

Do 228-201 VT-EIO cn/8037 (originally D-IDBG) manufactured 1984, with IC since JUN97 powered by Garrett TPE331-5-252D engines with an MTOW of 5980kgs.
Do 228-201 VT-EJO cn/8054 (originally D-CALI) manufactured 1985. Other details same as VT-EIO.
Both airplanes seat 19 pax.

Range with max payload is 540nm (1000km). Now make that 2 dosas (ek se mera kya hoga?)

Both airplanes seat 19 pax.
The aircraft I flew from COK-AGX had only 14 seats. The last 2 rows had been removed for some reason.
AFAIK, IC had 3 Dorniers, all of them handed down from the defunct Vayudoot. 2 in DEL and 1 in COK. The single aircraft in COK(one crashed earlier at COK) does/did a daily COK-AGX-GOI-AGX-COK rotation, totalling around 7.5 hours flying time.
The other 2, based in DEL did the other tourist routes linking Simla, Dharamshala and Bhuntar(Kulu) to the capital. There was also the odd flight from DEL to Chandigarh, Jabalpur and Gwalior. Services were pretty patchy as these stations would popup in one schedule and vanish in the next! The Dornier serivces out of DEL dont seem to operational anymore as the fares arent listed anymore. The sole Dornier in COK was grounded when the 2 commanders quit to join Air Sahara. Dont know if that route is still operational.
At one time, Vayudoot had quite a few Dorniers and HS748's linking tiny cities/towns to hub cities, feeding AI/IC flights. Can you believe flights to towns called Zero (!!!), Lilabari, Mohanbari, Nanded, Keshod, Puttaparthy to name just a few?

Out of the 8 228's which IC inherited from Vayudoot , 3 were on active routes , remaining 5 providing the spare parts to keep those 3 flying. The routes to Shimla , and all others from DEL have been suspended for a very long time, these were cancelled in early 98 or 99 dont remember the exact year. There were 2 a/c's moved to COK out of which one crashed. I think one is sitting in a hanger in DEL. This a/c was used sometimes to augment the AAI Do 228 for equipment calibration .

The Delhi to Simla, Dharamshala, Kulu and Gwalior routes show up on the IC winter-2003 timetable as well. But they are not on the Summer-2004 timetable.
Today the only airlines to Shimla and Kulu would be Jagson (also with Dorniers) and Archana Airways (LET-610's).

Jagson , still flies there but only charters , nothing else , Archana airways used to have 3 LET 410's , 1 of which was written off in LKO and one which crashed near Kulu , the airline has been out of business for ages. As far as the IC time table goes ,they would have printed the damn routes to Simla, Kulu and Dharamshala this yr as well if somebody had not pointed out to them that the aircrafts are no longer there.

Lilabari is very much an active station even now with a couple of weekly flights to Guwahati by Indian Airlines (ATR 42s).
Puttaparthi has seasonal service using nothing less than A320s (I am not joking!) when its most famous citizen is in residence!
Keshod also had a Jet Airways service for some time if I am not wrong.
While Vayudoot eventually over reached itself trying to ponder to every small town politicians whims and fancies to connect to their home towns, many of Vayudoot's original destinations are still commercially feasible. Many of these cities like Belgaum, Hubli and Vijayawada lost connectivity when after the demise of Vayudoot, NEPC and East West, for many years there were practically no small aircraft (50 seats or less) being operated on scheduled services by the various Indian domestic operators. Even after Jet brought in their ATR 72s, after a brief period of operations linking up some of these smaller stations (like their short lived services to Keshod and Kolhapur) they were mostly deploying their aircraft on fights to the bigger cities like Udaipur or Bhopal or even on metro routes like Chennai Hyderabad or Bangalore Hyderabad.
That some of these smaller stations are still viable have been demonstrated by Air Deccan whose services to places like Belgaum, Vijayawada and Hubli are still going strong even after one year of operations. They have subsequently added Kolhapur and Surat as well.

Rajeev: Puttaparthy has a twice weekly non-stop flight from BOM using A320's operated year round! This place is hardly 2 hours away from BLR by road?
Despite the scandals surrounding a most famous resident of this village, there is no shortage of stupid Americans coming down to "find themselves". So i dont think IC has much trouble filling these flights!!
I agree that Vayudoot is a concept that needs to be revisited. It was a good idea that was run into the ground.
