First Time Flying On A Beech 1900

I will be flying on a Continental (Gulfstream) B1900, D model I believe, from FLL to GHB. This is my first time on this type of aircraft. What should I expect. My experience is limited to 727, 737, 757, A320, A319, & a DC9(I liked that one!)
Any recommendations on what the best seat would be?

The B1900D is a very reliable aircraft, and trust me you would be surprised at the way it forces u back into your seat on the take off role. Advice, if you want to take pics, get row 6,7,8 or 9 row 1 has no windows but a great view into cockpit, rest of the rows impede view due to engine or wing.

That sounds good. That's why I liked the DC9, small plane lots of power. The good news is our seats are in row 7. Now I don't have to change them. Thanks!

Most of them are very young, building time.

You can expect to have a window and aisle seat at the same time Big grin

Hey Alfa75,

I used to work on the B1900, and I know you will enjoy your ride, they are a very powerful plane, and fast, the seats are comfortable but not as much room as the big jets. The plane only has 1 and 1 seating so it is a small plane, only 18 seats I am guessing, could be 19. So be prepared for the plane to be small the cabin is only about 25 ft long, and the head room is about 5' 10" I believe the specs are, I know I can stand up fine in it. There is no flight attendant onboard as none are required for less then 20 people. The first officer will make all the announcements so that will seem different, and as mentioned there is no door blocking off the cockpit, so you can see right thru and out the cockpit windows, which can seem a bit un-nerving at times if you have a problem in small planes. The airplane is very advanced it has all the advanced avionics that the big jets have so the pilots will be able to find where they are going, lol. With sitting back in row 7 after the plane takes off and you get to cruise altitude it will get quieter, but at first it will seem noisy because of the props.

I hope you have a good trip, and hope you enjoy it, being on a small plane the first time you may be nervous, so I hope it is smooth to make you feel better.

Flew a Beach 1900 for the first time a couple of years back from YYC to CYYF.
Very enjoyable. The best part was that it only flew at approx. 10.000 feet for the 3/4 hour flight so the views of the Rocky's were amazing. Even managed to identify and take pic's from my inlaws summer getaway.

Just flew Air Namibia from Eros Airport in Windhoek to Capetown via Walfish Bay, Lüderitz and Oranjemund.

It was a very funny experience, with deboarding at every airport and getting a lunch paket at every airport aswell. A little rough sometimes, but for most it was fun. Definetly worth doing again.

I flew Gulfstream from TPA to MIA last year. It was an awesome flight. There is a flight deck "door"...if you can call it that. I rode in row 1 with another pilot and we asked the captain if we could watch the flight deck during flight. Both she and the co-pilot agreed. It was a killer view! Row 1 does not have any windows, but if you are watching the flight deck you wont want a window!

I am 6'3" and had no problems being comfortable in the cabin. It is 1x1 seating (with 3 across in the last row) for a total of 19 seats. No F/A since there are less than 20 seats.

Have a great trip and enjoy the ride! It was a fun one!

One more thing, there's no (none, zip, zilch, nada) lavatory on board. Go before you fly!

Don't be surprised if the pilot asks you to change your seat prior to departure for weight and balance. I have had that happen on one of my 1900 flights.

Adding to the other warnings - cabin height, and no restrooms, do not try to take on large carry-ons. They will ask you to leave it on the tarmac and they'll stow it in back. It will be there for you when you get off the plane. There is no room under the seat in front of you, and it goes without saying that there is no overhead storage.

The drone of the prop engines might get to you as you have never experienced it, but I find that the continued vibrating drone helps me fall asleep. I take the B1900 when I fly home to RKS. The flight is just over an hour (not too long, but long enough), is pretty smooth most of the way. The only problems I have experienced are they cannot take off in high winds at some small airports such as RKS. Landing in high winds can get rough too.
Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

I could see a Beech or Raytheon 1900D taxi into position, some pax deplaned and went to the terminal. When my flight from TPA to RSW was called, I proceeded to the door. In the left seat was a young lady which did all the work - to me this flight appeared as a checkride for the lady in the left seat.

Take-off performance was awesome on that lightly loaded plane. Flying rather low along Florida´s west coast offered some very good views.
As with most prop-a/c it might be wise to bring along some ear protection - not that it is really needed, but I find it more convenient with them.

After arrival in RSW I had to disembark and to wait in the Terminal for a about 20 minutes before my 2nd leg (RSW - MIA) was called. Guess what: It was the same a/c with the same crew although operating with a different flight number, but this time we were 13 pax ...
Still I had good views of the Everglades on this flight.
Return to TPA on the same evening was on a packed AA B738 which was no fun!

Bottomline:

  • Bring along ear protection
  • Bring along a camera (if the weather is fine)
  • Have fun flying

Actually the 1900D does come with a lav as an option, whether CO uses that option I do not know. The lave takes up 1/3 of the cargo area, and is accessible by removing the centre seat of the last row.
You can't get there from here.

I took 4 1900D flights back in '99 with Commutair. I flew ROC-GSO vis IAD. The safety demo was a recorded voice. I remember sitting in row 1 and watching thru the non-existant cockpit door our landing in IAD. I remember wondering why the altimiter said 600 ft when we landed,not knowing how altimiters worked .
I also remember not liking the cramped seating,this was until I flew in the god-forsaken J31/41. The seating on a 1900 didn't seem so bad after that  Smile

Many of the 1900s have been retrofitted with cockpit doors or a curtain, so whether or not you get the cockpit view is a crapshoot, really.  Smile

Either way, the 1900 is a fun little plane. A bit cramped, but not bad for short hauls.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

I flew PHX-TEX in an AmWestEx by Mesa B1900D back in the mid-nineties. It's quite small, but I always loved the aircraft. As another user mentioned, expect the pilot to have you change your seats for weight and balance issues, as this has happened to me on aircraft as big as a Dash 8-200. I'm sure you'll have a great [if not bumpy] ride.

Its going to be very loud, and the airplane will get tossed around. You probably won't enjoy it unless you really like being in the air

Thanks for the info. I have been a nervous flyer in the past, but thanks to this site I have a new interest in flight. I am actually looking forward to this flight. It should be a fun experience.

Beech 1900D rocks and if you're scared of it, imagine how scary a Cessna ride would be for you. Relax. It's a deadly serious airplane with high performance and high reliability. An extremely enjoyable ride if you enjoy flying. I've ridden on the Colgan Beech fleet numerous times and they're great.
