CX's HKG-DPS-HKG Route

Sun Dec 17, 2006 9:53 pm

How does CX’s daily flight from HKG to DPS perform? With a block time in both directions of 4 hours and 45 minutes, it uses a mixture of aircraft on the route, including the 744, 773 and the 333. When it’s not full, a tax-inclusive, last-minute return can cost 600-900 GBP for an economy seat, although the minimum economy return price seems to be about 380 GBP. In contrast, a last-minute business return can cost over 1,100 GBP, while a normal business return seems to be about 600 GBP. What is the level of O&D customers on HKG-DPS-HKG?

I don't think that there is a lot of O&D traffic between HKG and DPS - nearby SUB is likely seeing relatively more O&D traffic -, and from what I understand, the DPS roundtrip - in summer often with reinforced frequency up to 10 weekly - is kept in the schedules not because it is a money spinner, but because the airline wants to complement its network. I also hear that CX is quite generous with award seats for its frequent flyers on this route.

DPS is a typical destination to attract Europeans and Americans, so I think CX has it in their destinations mainly for connecting passengers. Most locals from Hong Kong would rather go to Australia (also for sun and beaches), USA and Europe as well for holiday.

I fly this route fairly reguarly and I can say that it seems to be mostly transit pax and barring peak times it seems to have very average loads. I have been on it before when the whole of the rear cabin was empty on a 330, yet another time is was a completely full 773.

BTW, how is CX's CGK-HKG route? I have only ever done that routing once, about 3 weeks ago. The outbound morning flight to HKG was packed, the return leg however was extremely empty. I was in economy class and I counted no more than 30 Y pax, business class might have had a slightly better load.

Thanks, folks.

I presume the HKG-China routes are based on O&D than those connecting?

Could anyone provide a list of Chinese destinations from HKG and the frequencies?

Cheers,

James in Ko Chang.

I did it very recently and out of HKG we were a couple of tonnes below max weight on a 773 although not a full load of pax. Coming back we had around 300 pax and nearly 30tonnes in the belly. Not bad!
