    New Seasonal routes from Innsbruck to Eastern Europe, 777 to PUJ and return of service to Iraq

    This is all on heels of their Focus East strategy with 600 weekly flights to 45 destinations. In Sept., we saw the following:


    • Belgrade: 2 daily flights.
    • Bucharest: gained 3rd daily flight .
    • Kiev: Up to 4 daily flights, (including codeshare with Ukraine International Airlines).
    • Krasnodar: 5th weekly frequency introduced in September 2007 is maintained and the addition of a 6th weekly flight.
    • Podgorica: now 5 weekly service this winter, as opposed to 3 in previous winter season.
    • Rostov: increased from 4 to 5 weekly.
    • Sibiu: increased from 6 weekly to Daily.

Would OS ever consider starting BEY? I know they fly to DAM, but it seems BEY would be a logical market for them.

I'm very surprised that Austrian is sending their 777-200 to PUJ instead of JFK or IAD!

When I flew OS to Bucharest in 1992, they only had 1 flight daily. They fly to quite a few Romanian cities including Iasi.

They did fly to BEY all year round and then seasonally. But it seems these days they do not fly at all. A pitty because I enjoyed very much their service on the route.

I think all but Erbil are seasonal flights - aimed at the ski-bunnies out there!

Eastern Europe has been a boon to the Austrian skiing industry. I remember sitting next to a resort owner on VIE-INN some two years ago and they were gratefull as anything that the Russians are taking rooms the Germans used to take before they discovered the Dominican Republic as a winter get-away.

Too bad Australia is off that list.

They used to fly to BEY...but their service has been really strange..I presume it wasn't profitable.

They ran 5x weekly at times and at times 3x weekly during summer seasons (even daily for a short period) while their winter schedule ranged from none to 5 x and equipment ranged fom 737 to A321

It is basically a charter so OS is not loosing or making a lot of money on this route.

Eastward expansion seems like a smart move by OS. Because of geography and *A, OS competes with LH for most connecting passengers. Opening new markets, and expanding existing ones, in eastern Europe and beyond is an excellent way for OS to distinguish itself.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

Those routes aren't as profitable as the extensive charter program OS has.

I'm surprised they never made their way down to Miami, you'd think with easy connections to Eastern Europe, they'd be a major hit.

How many 772ER's does OS have?? I am assuming 5.

They inherited some from Lauda air. I know 1 is flying to DEL these days?? What about the rest?? I am assuming the 777 also fly to PEK, PVG, NRT or BKK and of course the charter to PUJ???

Well, the good old rules of traditional airline economics. Plane was mostly full but not year-round. Plane was mostly full but not upfront. Plane was mostly full but mostly transfer pax that less revenue than O&D accross the network.

I do regret the service as it was one of the most enjoyable ways to fly from BRU to BEY.

Austrian flew to Miami throughout the 1990s until 9/11, MIA-MUC-VIE. It would be great to see them back.

Yes they have done this the past two winters as charter flights using Q400. I was just wondering if this is returning this winter

As far as i know NO.

Russia, Bulgaria and Romania is on the card for expansion, as well as one Destination in Poland.
For the middle east: Bahrain/Abu Dhabi, Jeddah/Riyadh and/or Kuwait is on the Cards

Hoping for VIE-EDI with OS.

LH recently indicated that a significant number of passengers use their FRA-EDI service to connect between Edinburgh and Vienna, so there must be plenty of potential for a direct link.

If there is another large expansion planned (as mentioned on this thread), where will Austrian get the aircraft for this. They let go of their A330 fleet. Are new aircraft planned, or will cuts have to be made elsewhere?

Well, the B736 come back from the US Navy and the two Lauda A320 will transfered back to Austrian. No Expansion on the Longhaul network of Austrian....

Will we ever get a OS service back to DUB??? We only see the odd charter now but would be great to get a DUB-VIE 2 to 3 times a week.

Well, not exactly.
German is more spread across the whole province of Bolzano (also known as Alto Adige-Südtirol) contrary to Bolzano/Bozen City and surrounding area where the most of people is Italian-speaking (about 73% of total).


Back to OS news, on a sad note : Vienna-Turin (2 daily) seems to be dropped.

I think it's great that OS use F70/100 and CRJs on longer flights (2-4 hour nonstops). Shows that these jets are quite capable, despite being slammed here on A.net constantly  Smile
