American Airlines STL-LGW Route?

Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:58 am

Hi everyone,

American Airlines used to serve St Louis from London Gatwick using Boeing 767-300 aircraft. I have seen various photographs of an American Airlines 767-300 parked up at a remote stand at LGW during the morning and sometimes in the early afternoon, which I presume is the St Louis service.

I have enquired about times taken of various photographs of Gatwick, where the 767 parked at a remote stand is visible. I have seen photographs taken at 11:30/12:00/12:30pm which show the AA 763 still at the remote stand.

So my question is, what time did this flight arrive and depart from LGW when it was operated by AA?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I can't tell you the departure times from LGW but AA did run this flight after the TWA buyout right until November 2003 when they cut back the STL hub to 200 flights from 410. I believe the flight departed STL aorund 8pm or in that timeframe.

Hi Joseph,

According to one of the AA timetables from that time, the schedule was as follows:

Lv. STL 7:20pm
Ar. LGW 9:45am

Lv. LGW 11:45am
Ar. STL 3:10pm

The DFW and RDU flights were 777s at that time. STL was the only AA 767 into LGW.

Thanks for your reply.

I wonder why they would keep it at the remote stand until midday or later if it was scheduled to depart at 11:45am?

Don't forget in 2003 AA also operated LGW to DFW and RDU.

AA over the years operated to LGW from DFW/RDU/MIA/BOS/STL/ORD/BNA (maybe JFK when first took over TW routes around 91??).

I believe the peak was around '99 when they had DFW (2) ,ORD, RDU, BOS & MIA

I have this flight in my log when it was flown under TWA. It was my first and only TATL flight (and the return, LGW-STL of course) until just last summer. I was four when I flew it and I would greatly appreciate some more information about it and its operation.

Just how many of TWA and AA's flights used LGW?

Thanks for the reply,

Was BOS, MIA, ORD and BNA served from LGW using 767s as well?

Miami was served to LGW when AA took over the whole Miami hub from EA. BNA(Nashville) was flown over one summer in early 1990's when AA had a hub there. In 1991 for a month AA flew ORD to LGW in June 1991 then in July 1 1991 they switched to LHR , the day AA started flying to LHR.

Boston started 7/1/1991 with LHR, there could have been a time when additional frequencies were flown to LGW along with LHR.

I also worked at AA from 95 to 01 based at Chicago. I know for sure I worked ORD-LGW in the summer of '99. The layover was right at LGW airport. It was not a permanent flight - operated for 3 months until we had the slot to switch to LHR. It operated as AA98/AA99 which became ORD-LHR flights. I can't locate a summer 99 timetable but I have the summer 98 timetable which has the following LGW departures

BOS AA121 14:00 AB3 (eff 6/15/98)
DFW AA51 10:00 763
DFW AA79 12:45 763
MIA AA113 12:15 763 (eff 5/1/98)
RDU AA173 12:15 763

I remember being on AA99 departing LGW to ORD in summer of '99 being impressed at the long row of AA aircraft - looked like LHR. I asked a mamangement employee around the time why the build up at LGW - and he told me it was a competitive reaction to Virgin Atlantic and their objection to AA/BA joint venture that was first proposed in the late '90s. The ORD/MIA/BOS flights were gone by the end of '99.

Thank you for this. Is there any chance you could locate a summer 2002 and 03 timetable of AA LGW departures, when the STL service was operated by AA using a 763?

Thanks.

BNA was not served from LGW. In fact, I don't think BNA saw anything larger than a 757 scheduled. I could be wrong and an errant DC10 could have been scheduled in there.

I recall my first big overseas trip by myself when I was in my early 20's was to the US, but my father had fallen ill on a trip and was in hospital in London, so I flew from Melbourne to LHR and then on TWA from LGW to STL - this would have been about 1985, and the aircraft was a 747 (can not recall if 100 or 200 version). Day time flight. I don't think they had many Aussies on that route, so everyone assumed I was English. The big problem I had was customs in STL as they were not familiar with Vegimite (an Australian staple). After much confusion not with the item, the let me (and my important supply of Vegimite) through.

AA bought US's CLT-LGW authority and moved it to BNA. It did not last long at all, however.

Did the LGW departures and arrivals times look pretty much the same in 2003?
