When Delta acquired their 747's they were used on the
ATL-
DAL-
LAX route. At the time (this is when
DL was mainly a southern carrier specializing in transporting people from the north to the south) this was their flagship route. But the original 747's didn't stay too long due to being fuel hogs. But it was very prestigious for an airline to have the 747 at the time. They later added the L1011 on that route.
In fact one time I flew a Beech Bonanza into
DAL and was sandwiched between a
AA DC-10 and a
DL 747! I had to fly final approach at near cruise speed!
I remember when the hourly weather sequence reports changed from
DAL to
DFW. I was planning a cross country at the time.
It was in January 1974.
