Illuminated Blue Wi-Fi Signage On DL Aircraft

Sun Nov 03, 2013 6:53 am

If anyone has flown on DL recently, some may have noticed illuminated blue Wi-Fi signage replacing the illuminated No Smoking signage, with non-illuminated No Smoking symbols being printed on the PSUs next to them. I think all 757s now have them, and DL has recently started to put them on the MD-90s as well. I have also seen a video of the DL 739ER cabin, and it looks like they may be equipped with illuminated Wi-Fi signage as well, since the PSU had positions for three indicators with non-illuminated No Smoking signs in the center position. I don't think it is a "Please Turn Off Electronic Devices" sign, since DL now allows electronic devices to be used on the entire flight, rendering such signs useless.

I was thinking, could DL be planning to eventually use the illuminated Wi-Fi signage to indicate availability of Wi-Fi onboard flights? For example, could the Wi-Fi signs be turned off on flights to Hawaii and the Caribbean?

However, one issue is that the Wi-Fi signs on the 73G and 738 are non-illuminated due to the PSUs never having illuminated No Smoking signs; they were always non-illuminated on these aircraft types. Maybe if DL decides to install the Heath Tecna Isis Interior (formerly Project Amber) on the 73G/738 fleet the new PSUs will have illuminated Wi-Fi signage.

Eventually, the entire Delta mainline fleet will be equipped with WiFi, as Gogo is launching a satellite-based system to go alongside the ATG network. So flights to Hawaii and the Caribbean will have inflight WiFi, as will international flights. Inflight WiFi is now an expected amenity, and that includes international flights.
