Flydubai To Free Up Slots At DXB For EK

Thu Mar 10, 2016 9:37 pm

Some good news for EK: the carrier will get more slots at DXB as flydubai will transfer more flights to DWC.

Quote:
Dubai-based low-cost-carrier (LCC) flydubai will transfer more flights to Al Maktoum International-Dubai World Central Airport (DWC) to create additional slots for Emirates Airline at the congested Dubai International Airport (DXB), Emirates president Tim Clark told ATW. “This [the transfer] will happen in the next year and will give us a bit of additional growth at DXB,” Clark said, adding that Flydubai could possibly switch its complete operation to DWC in 2016.

Won't this affect EK in a way since quite a lot of EK passangers connect onto Flydubai?

But do they? I've seen it claimed before, but not seen any figures to back up the claim.

It might do, but ultimately something had to give and it was always more likely that FZ flights would be pushed to DWC than EK flights would be. From the perspective of "Dubai Inc", I'm sure it is a logical decision to push a 737 movement out to DWC and replace it with an A380 movement at DXB.

I don't think the number is so big, and some destinations overlap between FZ and EK, for example BOM, DAR, DEL, KWI... so that pax will not connect with EK becasue EK serve the market, so some of that flights can go easily to DWC.

Anyway FZ is not in the best moment of their short live, some destinations cancelled in Russia and with all the planes arriving this year I don't know what are they going to do, Actualy I though some of the destinations that QR just open could be good to try for FZ also, HEL, CNX, Pisa, I though Yangon was in the list but EK just announced, so forget about it.

Now we can start speculating on how EK will use the slots and how many are they going to get, I guess if FZ moves few B737 to DWC that will liberate at least few slots per day, so for EK that could mean few long haul flights.

Does this news help pave the way for the much anticipated A350/B787 "regional" order I wonder....?

As a travel agent specializing in Middle East travel, I can assure you that the answer is a resounding yes. This will have negative consequences for FZ.

You are absolutely incorrect on that fact. FZ relies on EK connections to fill their planes to a vast number of cities in their network. Without that feed, many of the routes will not be viable. The cities that you mention are just a small number of cities where they overlap. If you go back and look at FZ's route network, most of their destinations are NOT in EK's network. Once these flights move to DWC, you will see issues start to emerge at FZ. You are grossly underestimating the value of EK's connections to FZ.

Loyal FZ VFR pax finding DWC far will switch to Air Arabia which is just around the corner. I am sure FZ is not happy with the decision.

I know FZ gets a lot of traffic from EK but the cities that EK serves and also FZ serves don't have transit between both airlines, this issues have been discussed before and FZ start moving flights time ago, most of them because they are mainly OD.

Actually Dubai is developing a huge area of the city close to DWC, but it will take years to fully have that operational, last time what I read is the Dubai wants to have FZ to fully move to DWC and after 2020 when EK moves to DWC then FZ could move back to DXB.

Many cities overlap, not a small number.
KBL, BAH, DAC, AMD, MAA, DEL, HYD, COK, BOM, IKA, MHD, BGW, BSR, EBL, AMM, KWI, BEY, MLE, MCT, KHI, MUX, DOH, MOW, DMM, JED, MED, RUH, CMB, KRT, DAR, IST, EBB, and some destinations are suspended but also overlap like Kiev, Sana'a, Damascus.

True, but Dubai is developing a lot towards the south and DWC area, so in the next few years DWC will be in a very nice place.

Seem to me the solution is to move to DWC flights that overlap with EK and keep the flights to places EK doesn't serve at DXB.

Cheers, Ralph

You're over exaggerating. On a system basis about 30% of FlyDubai's traffic is connecting, but the majority of their business is O&D.

Note that at this stage they are not moving everything over. Routes with a higher connecting flow will no doubt stay at DXB whereas those that are heavy local markets can move over to DWC.

FlyDubai will take the risk/financial pain of clearing the path for EK.

IMHO, they aren't ready for that. Let's see how this goes...

The figure has been dropping. I couldn't find the link, but it used to be 30% of FlyDubai traffic was from EK. Now, connections are low (25%):
http://centreforaviation.com/analysi...onnections-and-partnerships-194367

But DWC is not a great location. Yields will drop. But some routes are not viable without the feed. The transition... will be brutal. The feed is not zero, but for an airline operating at near break even (financially), this is going to stress their operations.

The last half year wasn't good for FlyDubai:
