The MAX 200 is a MAX 8 certified for 200 passengers which was originally designed for Ryanair.

Yes, a very important win for Boeing to get an Airbus exclusive operator to switch to the MAX. Seems like this will be a great year for the MAX and the gap in orders will close.

Was really surprised by the new designation. Thought they have rebranded the Max as -100Max, -200Max, -300Max

Is it relatively easy to move from A320 to B373 as flight crew? Will Vietjet build a pool of B737 flight crew from scratch, or seek to transfer some current crews from Airbus to Boeing? Is there any consensus amongst flight crew that prefer one cockpit environment to another?

It's clear from VietJet's PR about the 737 order that they will operate both types concurrently. They talk about this order helping to increase their fleet to 200 aircraft by 2023.

The growth rates of some of these SE Asian airlines staggers and slightly worries me, where do all the pilots and service crew come from?

Vietjet Air is not really that "new", they have been around for 5 years already.

Vietnam has just opened up the market for private player and with Jetstar Pacific is now basically Vietnam Airlines, VJ is the only real competitor to VN in the Vietnam Market, where middle class is growing by large numbers.

But yes, I have no idea where on earth did all these crew came from.

I wonder if they will take A321neos in the new high density option also (240 seats?). That would be a realistic step up from 200 in the max in terms of "right sizing" capacity across their network.

It's a possibility, but perhaps they just want one aircraft size 190-200 seats for all markets. The Ryanair model...

And before it was the Easyjet and also Southwest model of success for a long time. We will see...

Big news, Boeing while not clamouring do need a few more MAX200 orders, this is a step in the right direction. Maybe a little surprising, but for LCCs the MAX200 makes a lot of sense.

Surely Air Asia are the FR of SE Asia already?

And there is a massive difference between the growth of FR and U2 (or WN etc) which took place in a relatively mature environment, with developed airports, ATC, plenty of pilots and maintenance staff etc

As for the plane itself, the MAX200 clearly has very attractive economics for this sort of operator.

Yes, it seems there really is an upcoming airplane bubble.

Is Vietnam investing in airports and ATC at a comparable scale?

It's difficult to see how that much growth can be accommodated both specifically in Vietnam and in Asia as a whole.

Sounds like politics to me. The US President visits, makes nice, and they buy some aircraft from our biggest exporter. I don't think it had anything at all to do with the merits of the aircraft.

If all it took were a presidential visit to sell $11 Billion worth of high tech exports the president would do nothing else. Care to look at other presidential visits and the full record of sales announcements? That might take work - and lead to better understanding.

Very simplistic view. Perhaps you can enlighten the group as to why it had nothing to do with the merits of the aircraft. Maybe you have some insider knowledge and can put to rest this notion that maybe, just maybe, Vietjet bought it because, oh, I don't know, they wanted it?

Guess merit had nothing to do with Vietnam Airlines ordering the 787 when their President visited the United States, either.

Heck, you don't get more political than China when it comes to commercial aircraft orders placed with both Airbus and Boeing and even they make an effort to match the frame to the needs of the airline they assign them to.

You forgot to mention:

Golden Myanmar Airlines (Myanmar)
- LCC of Myanmar
- 4 Active aircraft

Malindo Air (Malaysia)
- High-end LCC of Malaysia
- 57 Active aircraft
- JV between Lion Air and Malaysia Defence Department

Cambodia Bayon Airlines (Cambodia)
- Parent Company: Joy Air
- 3 active aircraft
- 9x A320 on order, 16x MA60 on order

Lao Central Airlines (Laos)
- First and Only LCC of Laos
- 3 active aircraft
- 2x SSJ-100 on order

Not to mention there are also non-ASEAN LCC close to southeast Asia that will be indirectly competiting with the ASEAN carriers:

HK Express (Hong Kong)
- LCC of Hong Kong
- Memeber of HNA
- 13 active arircrafts
- 4 A320neo and 2 A321neo to be delivered this year, with 8 more 30Sneo to be delivered by 2018
- Member of the U-fly alliance, allowing interlink between memebers.

RE: Vietjet Orders 100 Boeing 737 MAX 200

From a size perspective it seems to be a good fit for them. 180 seats in A320, 200 on 737-8 and 230 on A321. Question is about configuration of the A321 Neo. Maybe they will go to even higher capacity, means 240 seats.

According to Wikipedia they will get lease 10 used A319 from AB, I searched for a link, but could not find a source.

If all it took were a presidential visit to sell $11 Billion worth of high tech exports the president would do nothing else.

There are not that many countries that have been ostracized by the US the way Vietnam has. North Korea and Iran, but not many others.

Quoting neutronstar73 (Reply 34):
Very simplistic view. Perhaps you can enlighten the group as to why it had nothing to do with the merits of the aircraft.

Simple. The US has had a very chilly relationship with Vietnam ever since the end of the war. The President essentially ends that (including ending the arms embargo), and what can Vietnam do in return to show goodwill? Order some Boeing planes. That is what it looks like to me.
