Hello all!
I've seen many aerial photos from LAX and it almost always strikes me that the space between taxiways is also tarmac. I looked on google maps and indeed many taxiways were the same way, what is the reason for this?

Ease to maintain. As busy and congested as LAX is, it would be a pain to schedule a lawn mower to come in every month. It would essentially shut down one side of the airport as wide bodies couldn't get by with the mower in the middle.

Not to mention that growing grass in that area, or any sort of vegetation for that matter, is a major hassle... It would most likely end up being barren ground which would create lost of dust and FOD hazard.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

Asphalt is a great dust palliative for airports in drier climates. Paved inflields also help cut down on FOD stirred up by outboard engines, reduce loose vegetation, and can act as a countermeasure against any wildlife that may try to call those areas home.
Tiny, unreadable text leaves ample room for interpretation.

And grass uses an enormous amount of water which is always in short supply in Los Angeles. It could not grow without irrigation. A golf course can raise its fees since grass is fundamental to its operation, but as stated above grass at LAX is expensive to grow and expensive to maintain for very little useful purpose.

It's been like that at LAX for quite a long time... I can remember flying in there around 1990, seeing the concrete painted green, and thinking it was different/interesting.
It's primarily on the south runway complex where there is very minimal room to fit in two parallel taxi lanes between the terminal and runways. As others have said, not having to mow or maintain those strips makes life a lot easier!
