Flight Over The Nazca Lines In Peru

Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:16 pm

Dear all,

This Summer we would like to take a flight over the Nazca lines in Peru. Apparently there are quite a few dodgy operators doing that and in 2010 even a few accidents happened (I read that somewhere, don't know whether that's true). Can anybody recommend a safe airline, either from Ica or Nazca Airports? Which one is the best? Thanks!

Hey DutchBoeing!

You don´t need to be affraid anymore technically wise. The government is now really strict about the Nazca Line operators. The downside of that is, that the prices went steep high. For a 30min flight they will charge you around 120 dollars per person. Anything higher than that is ripoff and scare them with calling the tourist police. When I did that, I flew for 80 dollars   Definitely fly from Nazca, NOT Ica.

I recommend you NOT to buy any flight in any office in Nazca city beforehand. In the early morning (around 8am, not later), take a cab to the airport yourselve in person and buy a ticket right there personally. The agencies in town tend to charge more (then "offer" fancy extras like a meal and pickup from the hotel, etc, but not really worth it).
When I flew it, I did it with Aerocondor and it was really enjoyable.

If you need any more info, don´t hesitate to contact me!!!

Dear Adam,

Thanks for all the very helpful info. A few more questions:

1. Why def use Nazca and not Ica Airport?

2. As an aviation enthousiast, the actual a/c type is also important to me. What operators are there and what are their fleets?

3. We were thinking about booking a day tour from our hotel in Lima, but they are frightfully expensive (about USD 300 - 400 p.p. for a day). How easy is it to go ourselves by bus/train from Lima to Nazca (Airport)? Or would you recommend the tour?

4. Are there any domestic flights between Lima and Nazca? There used to be, but now I can't find them.

Thanks for all your help!

Personally, I travelled from Lima to Ica with bus, "Soyuz". There are several bus companies doing the Lima-Ica trip. Once in Ica, it is easy to catch a "combi" to Nazca. I am not aware of any flights between Lima and Nazca, I can be mistaken.

Also, it is my understanding that it is better to fly in the morning. In the afternoon it can get a bit bumpy. Considering the trip from Lima isn´t very short, I would recommend spending a night in Nazca as well.

The last time I went to Nazca I noticed planes overflying the dessert in the late afternoon, so apparently they don´t only fly in the mornings.

On the return, you might also stop in Ica and spend a night at the Huacachina Oasis. It's very nice.

Alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, you can continue on with bus to Cuzco from Nazca (the route between Lima and Cuzco goes through Nazca). The scenery is spectacular. I am not sure about the schedule/ times from the bus trip (you might miss a lot during the night) but still.

And also, I got quite airsick in the flight! Not because of the turbulence, but because of the maneuvering involved. Some very steep turns (in my flight the pilot pointed at the lines with the wingtip) You´ll see, its fun.

Hi DutchBoeing

I am actually in Nazca now and have a flight booked for Sunday morning. It cost me $90 for the flight and it was very easy to reserve in Nazca. When I get back I'll include some pictures/information in my trip report.
