SWG Treats Its Passengers As Cargo

Thu Feb 04, 2016 3:34 am

My brother just texted me their flight 10 days ago from YYZ to MCO took a detour flight to Cozumel Mexico to deliver an aircraft part for one of their planes there! 4 hr extra delay! Passengers were peeved to say the least. Is this common, legal, never heard of this happening before.

10 days ago? You guys should talk more. Not according to flightaware. There's nothing out of the ordinary. That doesn't even make sense on many levels. I'm throwing the BS flag on this.

I just checked Sunwing's flights 30, 32 and 68 for the last few months, and nothing did anything like you describe.

It is legal, but not at all common.

Notwithstanding what a 4 hour delay does to the operation and customer relations. It would just be cheaper to send it airfreight or charter a small jet!
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

That's what FedEx or the other airlines are for. Nothing unusual to see an a/c part brought over to another carrier to send out or to have another carrier meet one of your flights to pickup a part.

Ok, this operation is something.. I needed to get to Calgary from SJD asap. Westjet was full, so I went Sunwing. Once in the air we were told we were going to Vancouver. Cabin crew gave up explaining and hid in the back. Landed in Vancouver, completed CBSA inspection, retrieved baggage, hauled bags from ITB to domestic terminal, dropped bags at sunwing check in, waited, boarded, flew to Calgary 3 hours after landing in Vancouver. Why? I asked the crew... crew change. Capt was sympathetic, but explained the logic as this was what you get for paying $1000 for a 6 night stay and flight to/from Cabo...

Passengers are just self loading cargo. Real cargo is handled with care.

I'm throwing the BS flag on this                I haven't talked to my brother since Christmas. Living half a world apart and having different time schedules makes it very hard to talk to family. I'm not even sure what you were going at with your comment and how it applies to the OPs post.

Sometimes planes have to make unscheduled en route stops -- for fuel, to change crew, to drop / collect pax. It's not desirable and airlines will do what they can to avoid it, but it's often the lesser evil than cancelling / stranding punters etc. It's not "treating passengers as cargo".

There's a shocker

So getting tired of the "ordeals" people have with certain airlines. If they were truly that bad, they wouldn't be in business anymore, but yet here they are, filling their planes with passengers year after year.

Treating passengers as cargo would mean they were loading passengers in one of these.

While possible I think that is really bad planning if Sunwing did that. Kalitta flies Falcon cargo jets that are often used to expedite parts for grounded planes. Kalitta is based in Michigan so it would be a whole lot better that making a stop on a revenue flight.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

These stories come up every single winter, without fail.
I remember when I was still working airport level, having WG pax checking in for their flight and being advised of 18+ hour delays. Why? Because their aircraft was still sitting on the ramp after going AOG and needed to bring yesterday's load of people to Cuba first.

Ding ding. I avoid them like the plague for this reason alone.
