Ground Maneuvering Cameras!

Sat Jul 13, 2002 12:16 am

It is the first time that i heard of their existence !!!
It is clear that they show to pilots what the marshaller is doing, but i wonder how they function and where are the cameras situated ?

This is the first time I saw it on a 777 too. However, I've seen these cameras quite often on business jets. They are simply video cameras usually mounted in strategic places to monitor landing gears, engines, etc.

The camera system I am familiar with on a Challenger 604 has one mounted on the front landing gear, one on the tail looking forward and one somewhere on the upper fuselage looking at the rear engines. The one on the front gear is interesting...when the gear is down the view is in front of you. When it's retracted, the view is straight down.

They are used for ground maneuvering primarily - as the 773 has such a long wheelbase, they aid the pilots gauge taxiway clearances etc. Cameras are mounted on the belly and on the leading edges of the horizontal stab.

Quick question. Can these cameras on the 777 also be used in flight to monitor things, such as an engine fire or landing gear not locking? Personally i think this is a great idea and could be very useful for the crew, andground based maintainence crews if the images could be transmitted. Also, do the images get saved on the flight data recorders?

I wouldn't imagine there's anything stopping them from being used in flight...

I heard Lion Airlines' of Indonesia MD-80s have them too, and they're connected with pax video units! Don't know whether they're the same or not, never been flying with them, but they mentioned it in their ad.

Leej is correct in why these cameras exist on the B777-300, it is such a long aircraft that we need to see the location of the body gear whilst turning especially where the taxiways are narrow.

I also took a photo of what is seen when the cameras are switched on inflight but for some reason it sits in Johans queue at present, so it may or may not appear.

Cheers.

Here's that pic you were talking about Ejazz.......

One of the more "unusual" shots I've seen, definately something that would go well here at airliners.net!

I think the rear cameras are those black spots you can see on the horizontal stabilizers :
