Spotting At Logan

Wed Aug 11, 2004 11:17 am

Does anybody know a good place to spot at Logan International Airport? I can't think of anywhere, and I'm open to suggestions. However, there are a few guidelines about the area I would like you to follow:

  1. The area must not require going through airport security

  2. A 210mm lens should be sufficient for getting good photographs from the area

  3. The area should be within 1/2 mile of Logan International Airport

Thank you!

Alright, then

Let me put it this way: Are the parking garages at Logan good for spotting?

There is a commercial airport in the upper plains named Logan, but I'm assuming you mean Boston.

Here's a post from a few days ago:

BOS is one of the least spotter-friendly airports in the US. They have made it clear that aircraft enthusiasts are not welcome. The garages, while providing some nice views, are not an option. Searches in this and the Civil Aviation forums will give you some stories. You also may be able to find some alternate, off-airport, spots in those same posts.

I don't know why you people have so many issues with BOS.

Just remember one thing.
2 of the planes which crashed into the WTC left Boston on 9-11.
Massport governs the airport and if they don't like photographers to hang out at their property, (mainly parking garage Terminal B) you have to accept it.

Thing have changed dramatically. Before 9-11 Boston was a very spotter friendly airport. I have been up to the parking garage numerous times and never ever had problems with the authorities.

Anyway, back to the topic.

210mm is not a lot, especially for Logan. You might get some approach shots (RWY 27 / 22L), but the threshold of either RWY Is further away than "1/2 miles from Logan"

Don't want to plug any of my photos. Just do a search for Vasco Garcia @ Boston.....most of the recent shots we either taken with 600mm or 1200mm.
Older shots from 2001 and prior were taken with 500mm or less.

If you need more info, drop me a line

While I do have issues with BOS, I was just stating the facts in my post. I don't think that anyone can argue that BOS is spotter friendly and because of this, I wouldn't recommend a visit to the garages for spotting.

As long as it's been brought up - the planes may have left Boston, but spotters on the Terminal B rooftop didn't contribute. Didn't some of the attackers clear security in PWM???

Yes, we have to accept and obey their rules since it's their property, but that doesn't mean that we can't disagree with them.

Before 9-11 Boston was a very spotter friendly airport. I have been up to the parking garage numerous times and never ever had problems with the authorities.

And many airports still are - why is it that other airports can be secure places and at the same time recognize that not everyone who is at the airport watching planes means harm?
