What Causes Heat Haze And Why?

Sat Mar 08, 2014 2:08 pm

Hello members,

I am wondering what causes my worst enemy to come alive, heat haze. I have seen heat haze on my photos in wet weather, in hot weather but to my surprise during cold weather too.

So what causes heat haze exactly?

Heat haze is caused by a temperature difference between layers of air and the effect of the different densities on refraction of light. So, for example the surface of a ramp/runway heats the air directly above it, and this causes heat haze as it mixes with the cooler air higher up.

I find that that heat haze can be particularly nasty during cold temperature, presumably because there can be a greater difference in the temperature.

As noted, heat haze is the visual effect of temperature differentials between air layers. A runway that is absorbing heat radiation from the sun convectively transfers that heat to the air above the runway. The shimmering heat waves are the visual appearance of the heat transfer.

Cold temperatures are quite nasty for heat haze - a cold sunny day the runway gets heated by radiation then warms the air at the surface. Any additional wind will increase the effects as it increases heat transfer.

Improvise, adapt, overcome.
