Hi folks,
I'm thinking to go to LAX so have few questions if you could assist me.
1. Is it fully open for photography? Any problem from security?
2. Does it have sense to take 600mm lens with me or 100-400 will be enough for existing abilities?
3. Could you assist with contacts of helicopter servises around airport.
Thats all for the moment but I think I'll have more closer to day.

1. Pretty much.. Apart from parts of Dockweiler Beach. At least I haven't been questioned during my time spotting at LAX.
2. I'd say no. There's too much heat haze generally. Or even smog or the Marine Layer. I would expect the use of it to be limited but others who have that lens/shoot at 600mm may have a different opinion.
3. Star Helicopters. I've heard that the places you can hover over are drastically reduced from 3 years ago.

What month are you planning your visit? What camera body will you be using?
1. You may be stopped if you're on a sidewalk, but police usually just ask what you're up to. Many times passing motorists will call the police because they think photography looks suspicious, and when called the police are required to respond. They will do what is called a field inquiry, and I've been with foreign photographers when this has happened. Just keep your passport on you, answer their questions honestly and it should be fine. Note: this has only happened to me around 5 times and I've photographed at LAX more than 100 times so it is rare.
2. I've shot with as long as 1120mm effective length on a 7D+500mm+1.4TC. It depends on the time of day, time of year, and the type of shot you are looking for.

For heli spotting, a 70-300 lenses with D5200 (1.6 crop factor) would be ok, or I need something like 100-400?

I've literally never been approached/questioned/hassled/anything by cops around LAX.
I've never had a problem there either.
On full-frame, you may want more zoom than 400mm, at least from Imperial Hill. 100-400 is perfect on a crop body, but short for smaller aircraft on full-frame.
However, on the majority of days you'll be atmosphere-limited. The air here is terrible, and heat haze can be rampant.

You mean the dune area between Vista Del Mar and Pershing? If so, not a trailer park - was a neighborhood called Surfridge (and if I'm being really picky, not part of the beach either
).

I guess what I should have said in my post was that I've never had any issue in any publicly-accessible area.

There are a couple of large, open parking lots at the approach end of the north runways on Alverstone Ave. The lots are used by construction workers. I've been there several times this year and not had a problem.
