The End Of Vacation (NAS-LGA-PIT)

Tue Aug 12, 2003 11:23 am

My vacation was pretty good. I was not what I expected though. I really wanted to walk down the streets of down town Nassau, and eat in their cheap Bahamian restaurants and cruise in the bays of the Bahamas. But, I only got to hang around the Atlantis Resort & Casino which, don't get me wrong, was unbelievably beautiful. The exotic flowers, the palm trees, the tropical plants, the warm weather, the crystal turquoise ocean, and the soothing Bahamian breeze. It was such a relaxing getaway from the busy schedules of home. But, every vacation has to come to an end. Here was the end of mine.

There was some tension as we left the hotel. I was not in a good mood. I didn't feel as if I went to a different country. I did not get to really experience the Bahamian lifestyle. There will be other opportunities, but this one was not that opportunity. Our limousine arrived and we, though not very happy, departed to the Nassau International Airport.

We drove down the streets of Nassau, passed some churches, and some really pretty landscapes. We saw some cruise ships in the harbor and then we all dozed off to a 10 minute nap. When I awoke, we were at the entrance of the Nassau International Airport. I believe I took a few pics of the terminal building. We arrived at the departure deck (which was not elevated) and got out of the car.

We took our bags to the USAir check-in counters. I noticed also that NAS is also served by American Eagle, Continental Airlines, Bahamasair, Delta Air Lines, and Laker Airways.

We checked in everything and then we saw some of my parents friends who were at the Bahamas with us and who were waiting for their flight back to the States. We sat and chatted with them for about 10 minutes. My sibs and I went to a little store and bought some snacks. I got a Junkanoo Punch which was really good. We said good bye again to my parents' friends (first time was at the Hotel), and proceeded to the customs area and security checkpoint.

I hadn't yet finished my drink so I had to chug it, and I HATE chugging carbonated drinks because it burns my throat. This just increased the tension because my family were all yelling at me to hurry up so we could go through to security. I was really getting angry at this point.

I finished drinking it and then we went to the customs area and got our clearance to go back to the United States. This took about 15 minutes. Then we headed over to the TSA and dropped our bags off. It looked very un organized. Then we proceeded to the security check point where the line was LONG because they only have 1 metal detector and one X-Ray machine. The line was about 15 minutes long. There were a lot of people going back home. We cleared security and entered the boarding area. It seemed to be a commom boarding area because all of the airlines seemed to use this one large area and the gates were in another section of the aircraft.

We sat down and I pulled my book out (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and continued my reading. We met back up with my parents' friends. They came and sat with us because they were travelling the same airline. My parents and them talked for about 30 minutes while I read and my sister harrassed my li'l brother about something. Then they called our flight number. We said goodbye to my parents' friend ONCE AGAIN!! and showed our passports and walked to the other part of the airport where you boarded your plane.

We were greeted by a very kind gentleman who asked to see our boarding passes and told us we were clear to head down the jetway and board the plane. We walked down the jetway and were greeted by the USAir flight attendants and Captaina and first officer. They were really kind and the captain gave my little bro a hi five and told us to enjoy our flight.

We found our seats and my brother took the window. I sat in the middle seat, but it didn't really matter to me because there was soooooo much room. This is the most room I've ever had in Economy Class. When we boarded in PIT on the 2 or August I couldn't believe how much room we had. It was so nice. I was still in my bad mood so I really was not trying to fight with my little brother which was about to commence because he closed the window. I was not down with that so I moved to the middle seat on the other side of the aircraft.

I took out the Attache magazine and started to read it when the safety demonstration came on the TV monitors. I read the magazine until we started to taxi. I was trying to look out of the window without making the person sitting in the window seat feel as if I was staring at him. I hate to make people feel like that. We slowly taxied to the runway and lined up with the runway. We started to accelerate when I started to read the magazine again. I was studying the International destinations map at the back of the magazine. USAir goes to smorgasboard or places around the caribbean and a few cities in Europe. That's pretty cool.

The take-off was very smoothe and it was really quiet too. I loved to quietness because it made me feel really calm. I liked that. We smoothly rotated and were airborne. I wasn't at the window so I couldn't take and aerial view of the Bahamas, but I enjoyed that on the trip coming. We had a really good climb with a few minor bumps, but it was really sunny outside and really pretty in the air. I really enjoyed it. Once again the TV monitors came on and advertised Dividend Miles and announced that USAirways would be becoming a member of the Star Alliance airline corporation. It also stated that United Airlines would be becoming business partners with USAirways. They concluded with stating that the use of electronic devices were now free to be used (except for cellular phones).

I finished reading the magazine and decided to read Harry Potter. It was getting really good. I forgot what part I was at. The flight attendants came around witht the concessions cart. I had a Coke and then some pretzels. The pretzels were really good. I was eating them while reading. I like doing that. The flight attendant came to collect our trash and I asked for some more pretzels. She seemed to be thrilled by my asking and said sure with a 100 watt smile and returned 5 minutes later with a bag of pretzels and 2 bags of Cape Cod Potato Chips. I offered one of my bags to my sister and my mom asked me if Corey could have them if she didn't want them. I told her no because I was still a little angry with him. I ate the other bag of potato chips and the pretzels. I was filled pretty good for this long 2 hour and 30 minute trip to New York.

After my little snack I returned my book back to my book bag and dozed off for about 30 minutes. I awoke just in-time for the announcement about our descent into La Guardia Airport. I pulled out the magazine once again and took a look at the movies and TV programs that they had showing on Transatlantic and Transcontinental flights. While descending I was glancing back and forth between the skyline of New York City and my magazine. They were both very interesting though you really couldn't see much because it was very foggy, but it was really nice to see New York City again. We had a smooth landing into La Guardia Airport. We taxied to our gate while listening to the message reminding us to keep our seat belts fastened and listening to connecting gates. This message concluded with "Thank you for flying USAirways. We hope you enjoy your stay in New York whether you are flying here on business or for personal enjoyment and hope you choose USAirways for all of your air transportation needs" or whatever they said.

We arrived at the gate. We let the gentleman next to the window out. We didn't deplane because we werent' sure if we were supposed to stay on or not because our next flight was on this aircraft to Pittsburgh. The attendant asked us to deplane and then get back on. We were told how much wer were appreciated for flying USAir by the attendants as we got off the plane, and we thanked them for their excellent service (well at least I did). We did deplane. We went to the food court and while my family was getting McDonald's or Sbarro, I was getting some Chinese food. I had sweet and sour chicken. It was really good. I was still having my mood (although I seemed to have eased out of it somewhat on our tremendous flight from Nassau). We used the restrooms and headed back over the Gate 11 where we were some of the last to board because when we got there the gate area was pretty much empty.

We were greeted again in the same way we were greeted from Nassau--friendly, kind, and really warmly. We made our way to our seats which was in the same row, but I had to take the seat next to my brother this time. It wasn't really that bad because we didn't talk the whole trip. I pulled out my book and started to read. This is what I did for most of the flight.

The flight attendants came around and did cross check and made sure everyone was comfortable and in position to take off. They turned on the safety demonstration and we taxied to the runway where we waited in a tremendouse line of about 20 aircraft. I read the whole time while were in line so it didn't bother me. I didn't really care. I feel safer on the ground anyways. But then again, it was so peaceful in the aircraft. My bro wasn't talking, the cabin was quiet, air flow was really cool. It was heaven in a plane. I kept reading. It was really nice to be in a calm atmosphere. The captain gave frequent updates as to when we'd be taking off, so no one was really in a state of confusion. It was very cool.

Finally, after 20 minutes or so of waiting, we were cleared for take-off. We lined up with the runway and we started our roll. It was quiet, but not very powerful. I was looking out of the adjacent window and saw plane after plane after plane roll by. The line was NOT getting shorter. We rotated and we were airborne. Another smoothe climb. I looked over and noticed that my parents had started a really good conversation with the guy sitting in the window seat. They were really talking, but that's just how my parents are.

I was really into my book now. The TV's came on again advertising things and telling us we could turn on our electronic devices except for cell phones. I was still reading, but then I decided to give it a rest after the chapter I had just finished. I took out the Attache magazine again. I really like it. I was perusing through article after article and was really fascinated by the destinations charts and the terminal maps of USAir hubs and United Airlines hubs.

The beverage service came around and I ordered a coke. After I had finished drinking I decided to put my magazie away and just enjoy the rest of the flight. I reclined, and stared out of the window and glanced around the cabin a little. This was very good because I was really deep in thought and I was calling a lot of things to mind. This really helped me. I also noticed how the flight attendants were happily waiting on people. I was superly impressed. I was really noticing how clean the airplane was. These planes seemed brand new.

The flight attendants came around once more to collect any extra garbage and asked everyone to turn off all electronic devices and to returen seat backs and tray tables to their upright position. We descended into PIT. It was a very smooth and professional landing and I really enjoyed the landing (unusual).

We taxied to the gate and the message about flying with USAir and connecting gates came on. We arrived at the gate and deplaned. Once again, I thanked the crew and deplaned. I felt really good. Flying with USAir eased my tensity and really made me appreciate air travel a lot more. We were headed to baggage claim when I had asked my dad if I could go to the end of councourse C to view the transatlantic gates (Frankfurt and London). He said to meet him at baggage claim. I went and it was really cool. I was standing in a gate area which boarded flights to Europe, the place I long to go to. I was just thinking about how cool it would be to be able to walk down those jet ways and board a USAirways Airbus A330-300 or a USAirways Boeing 767-200. It was really awesome. There was no one there of course because those flights were long gone. They depart at 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

I walked back down to the atrium and down to the station for the people movers. We rode back down to the Landside Terminal. We proceeded down to baggage claim. Our bags were among ther first to come. All of our bags except for my sister's. Her's actually didn't come at all. So, they went to talk about lost baggage and stuff.

I had a great trip, and even greater flights. I loved my travel experience with USAirways. I really enjoyed the experience, the service, and the cleanliness of the airplanes and the spaciousness. I have every intention of flying with them again, and I hope you fly them too. Please post your comments. God bless!!!

Dear Chris,

That was a brilliant review. Bravo!!! I enjoy reading your reviews. As a matter of fact I think I will add you as a respected reviewer. I know how you feel about feeling like you never went to a foreign country. That is why when I went to Jamaica in 2000, I felt the need to walk around the city of Negril on my own at times. I enjoyed it. I highly recommend Jamaica. Anyway, great review.

May God bless you and everyone through Jesus Christ with lots of love,

Jeff

Thank you. I try to add some flava to my posts. I know how I get really bored with long, but un-detailed reports so I figure that if I enjoy then possibly, my readers will too. I would love to go to Jamaica. It's such a beautiful country from what I've seen. Yep, I agree with you just having to get away and go experience some foreign culture on your own. That is what going to a different country is all about.

Thank you for adding me to your respected users list. I think that I will do the same because I like how you are so positive and very Christian.

Thank you for reading my post and I hope to be hearing from you again soon. God bless!!!

Nice report. I have also been very pleased with my USAirways flights. Good to know that you feel the same way.

"I was just thinking about how cool it would be to be able to walk down those jet ways and board a USAirways Airbus A330-300."

I have flown an A330 PIT-FRA-PIT and I can assure you it is fantastic. Cool is an understatement. Hope you can fly one soon, it is quite an experience.

You fly out of Pittsburgh? That's great. It's a really outstanding airport. I would love to go to Frankfurt, Germany. It's on my list of "things to do before I die." Although, I really hope to fly to London on an Airbus A330-300. That will probably be from MDT-PHL-LGW. I don't know. I'm really glad you enjoyed reading my post on my vacation. It was really special, although incomplete. I hope you continue to read and enjoy my posts. God bless!!!

PS: USAir is a good airline, isn't it?

USAirways is a very good airline, not the best in my book, but their economy class on the A330's is a really nice product. My home airport is Daytona Beach, but I fly out of Orlando. Here is my latest trip report on NW & KL.
https://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/34289/

When I flew US I flew MCO-PIT-FRA and back. The only reason I was going to FRA was because I used to live there and wanted to visit some friends. London is a much better place to go for a vacation.

Thanks. I'll take your word for it, and I think I was in the middle of reading your report (if yours is the one with the nasty attitude witch at the World Business Elite thingy cuz you were only 20). I need to finish it. It was starting to sound really really good. You're very descriptive. God bless!!!

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is and excellent airport (although my favorite is the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport). It's really easy to get to all of the concourses in St. Louis. There were so many American Airlines gates that I was like seeing red, white, and blue all day!! hahaha!!

My AIM screen name is OboePlayaz1988 and I'm on right now. Also, my ICQ # is 159498448, and I get on that too. My e-mail is [email protected] if you want to e-mail me.

I just finished reading an Southwest Airlines report, and it was very descriptive. I really like your writing style. I'm on my way to reading your return trip post. Thanx again and God bless!!!

Hey, great report! Interesting that you were on the same plane for both legs...I don't think I've ever done that. US is one of my favorite airlines...never have any problems with them.

If you go to Europe on US, take the A330- it's remarkable. The planes are all comfortable, clean & the IFE is second to none (in terms of airlines I've flown). It's worth the extra money (if there is any) to take the A330. I've been on 3 (N670 & N674UW, N675US) & will be on two more later this year going to/from London. It's like Pokemon to me..."Gotta Catch 'Em All" (referring to all 9 330s in the fleet).  Big grin

Yes, I hope to go to London before I turn 16. I hope to fly on USAir with the Airbus A330-300 or the USAir Boeing 767-200. Are their Personal Entertainment Systems on the Boeing 767-200? I am positive that there are on the Airbus A330-300.

I agree with you 100% that USAirways is a really great airline. They are very hard workers, and I appreciate that very much. Will you post reports, or have you posted reports on your Airbus A330-300 flights? I would really be interested in reading them.

Thanks for your response!!

Yeah, I'll be posting reports for both flights coming up. Here's one from my A330 flight from SJU-PHL, US 126- https://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/19293/6/

The 767s have PTVs in Envoy only- coach has entertainment on the wall screens. Every seat has one on the A330.
