Very nice pic, but so sad :-( Every fs fan have take off from Meigs at least one time ... It is very hard to see how quickly a part of aviation has disapeared :-(((

Why was the airport actually closed? It is sad because I liked the airport and I practiced my first take-offs and landings there on my Flight Simulator.

I also took off and landed many times at this airport on FS3, in 1992. :) Flight Simulator has come a long way since then. I wonder which airport will be the default airport for the next version of FS since this one will no longer exist.

I've just known that Merrill C. Meigs is closed, but why??? It's a pity to know that the little airfield where every FS fan made his first take-offs with the Cessna 182S it's going to disappear...

I know the reason Flight Simulator 9 start airport is Boeing Field in Seattle and not Meigs...

I thought it was Kai Tak before I learned that this is the MS Flight Simulator Airport. I hope there will be another airport like Meigs.

I wonder why counties and governments have the habit to destroy the most loved airfields worldwide. See also Kai Tak, Athens Airport, now Meigs Field.

Thanks to Mayor Daley, and a political adgena. He says closed due to terror threat...yeah, right. He's wanted a park there for decades now, just a good excuse. Nice pic, too bad 4 miegs :(

No-One knows why it closed. The Mayor just didn't like it. He says he wants to put up a park; however even this is in question since a win-win combination park-airport plan has been all but ignored by him.

It's not for outsiders to judge about Meigs Airfield. About the overnight (2003-4-12) action: is it demo-crazy that the Mayor of Chicago is still in office? He should obtain the law not violate!

Everyone of us should fight to keep airports open unless there are very serious reason to close it.

The photographs is indeed very good. Good composition, great colours. On the airport that is no more, it certainly brings sadness to me. At first I thought is was just another shot from the air, to my horror, its what used to be Meigs. Goodbye my friend, you got played out by politics by your own people. But you still have a lot of good friends worldwide with fond memories.

This is a sad day for aviation, real and virtual. I earned my virtual wings here, and also left countless aircraft on the runway, and in the lake!

Good picture, wish there was a runway there. Similar thing seems to happen here in Finland as the city of Helsinki is going to close Malmi airport and build some apartment buildings there. That airport is a part of Finlands history, but no mercy there. Private aviation just doesnt seem to buy enough votes...

I swear if I ever see Daley in person he's gonna remember me ;) But anyway, Chicago is paying for it along with traffic at other airports (MDW,PWK) are a lot busier. Now, believe it or not, Chicago is adding a heliport there!!! I mean WTF?? Hellloo, you wouldn't need it if the field were still open to the biz-jets.

It can't be an airfield, as it is too short. so i think it's a heliport

I think that there was a runway.Meigs is in FS200, but more i don't know.

Very sad. And it was not a helipad. It was a one runway airport but was demolished for stupid reasons
