ATA started its life as Ambassadair in February of 1973 as a low-cost charter airline. Over the years, ATA carried many military charters and eventually ended up with regularly scheduled flights throughout North America, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. In 2004 ATA filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and, in 2008, ceased operations. TD is now on 24R at 17:51 PDT.

What a beautiful shot Paul! Classic aircraft and livery, and an iconic location at LAX.

Thank Andrew... how time flies as it seems like yesterday you were here shooting with the group. But it has to be 10 or 15 years, I guess.

Incredible detail. Based on the sunlight hitting the pilot and the fan blades you can surmise this was a late summer afternoon landing. Love it!

I remember seeing these in Hawaii back in 2001. One of my favorite planes to this day.

Wow- learn something new every day; based on the number of exit doors, I was prepared to say "Hey! That's not a -500!"
But now I know that ATA had that skinny L3/R3 door ADDED to the plane after they picked it up from Royal Jordanian.
I never knew anyone was adding exits to the short body L10. But I guess that enabled them to stuff in their dreadful 3-4-3 seating!

FAA requires an emergency exit every 60 feet. FAA made ATA add the 4th door when US registered. The Delta -500s were grandfathered.
