Reverse before landing

Wow!,reverse before landing!?,why?

Hey! what's the story with the reverse thrusters before touchdown? i thought the reverses could only be activated only once the plane was on the ground! could anyone explain please?

My guess is that since it has 4 engines
2 are on reverse thrust and slowing the plane down and 2 are providing thrush so the plane dosent slam on he runway. i guess its an easiae way of slowing aircraft like this.

It's allowed to use reverse in the air before touchdown on this type of aircraft.
It's real Russian plane:)

Lovely aircraft, its great to see something as unique as this, and an airline like Air Koryo (sadly banned in the EU!) and a wonderful photo it is.

Beautiful Shot

I think this type only has thrust reversers on the outer engines only. Something about hot air exhaust damaging the airframe AFAIR.

Just about to pull down the rear wheel.

Reverse just prior to touchdown is common practice for the IL-62.

Love that tiny tail-strike preventing wheel.

The reason why there is reverse thrust in the air is due to the long spool-up time of the engines, so this already gets them ready for landing. Nice picture Raymond!
