What a beautiful An-70... oops, A-400M. In the West people say all the time that Russia copies their aircraft, what do they have to say now?

Note also the props rotate in opposite directions too.

This beauty looks like a hybrid mix of the different transports... the C-17, the Transall C-160, the Hercules... and ends up beating all of them in the looks department! Hoping to see her soon!

Plane is cool, though I'm not too keen on the C-17-like tail - that part is a bit ugly. Props look wicked though.

Looks like a propeller version of C-17. But Looks good. Thanks for sharing this picture.

Interesting aircraft. How standard is it to have counter rotating props on the same wing?

Its a European C130....They pretty much copied the configuration. But nice photo and unique props.

Looks like nice competition to Hercules or C-17 from US. Good job. Hope it's as good as rest, or even better.

Looks like a cross between a C-17 an Antonov An-70 and the CASA... Very cool!

An excellent view of a new aircraft showing its useful purpose of general transport and long range reconnaisance duties. I wonder if the props are of the contra rotating type... A nice clean shot of a powerful newcomer..

It does look a lot like a C-17, except for the props and the refuel boom. Very pretty.

If the STOL capability, power to weight ratio, fuel consumption and cargo handling is better than a C-17 we have a winner.

But even if they are, the politicians decide anyway.

The rest is ugly.

Congrats Airbus for yet another feat in aviation history... Interesting to find mid-air refuelable part in the front... Just imagining about Airbus coming out with A-380 along with backdoor entry like of A-400 !!!!

A great milestone for aeronautic industry in Spain. It is the largest aircraft assembled in our country. Also Spain is responsible for 10% of the Airbus 380 and 14% for the eurofighter

I can't believe so many people find this airplane ugly! It gives off a deep impression of function over looks and that in itself makes this military craft gracious. Those scimitar shaped props are just breathtaking. I'd love to hear it take off. Good job Airbus!

Flares in background are a nice touch.

Nice photo, love the props. looks alot like the C-17 the tail is identical.
Anonymous

The nose section reminds me of a C-141 and the tail section of a C-17.

It looks like Ukrainan Antonov 70 which was built about 15 years ago. But in any case it is perfect.
Anonymous

Nice Photo. Too bad its so far behind schedule. I hear some countries are having to buy C-17s to fill gaps from not recieving A400s in time to replace ageing aircraft. Way to go Airbus.
Anonymous

Looks like a small C-17 wannabe with props and an ugly nose. Nonetheless, I think it will be a sufficient C-130 replacement. At least, it better be with the delays and growing expense....

In 1998 i read in a german magazine that NATO countries were interested in getting a new-generation prop carrier, in order to withdraw the Transal C160 and the Hercules, but they were reluctant to buy the Antonov 70, that was already around, because some people wanted Airbus to get that contract. Ten years later, it is hard not think that information was more than rumours.

This is what held up the A380? A high powered mutant of some kind inexplicably spawned between the C-17 and the An-22....well I like the props...
Anonymous

Simply wonderful, brand-new, looks fantastic. Awesome!

I can't say it's a clone of An-70 but I think it was "inspired" by Antonov ;)

Since they are a lot of Military Transport Aircraft on the market, it is not unlikely that a new type like the A400M would look similar like at least one of them. The design is given by design requirements that the aircraft has to meet, and not by competitors. That is why the result is a similar looking aircraft.

OK, my grandma thinks all cars loke the same..that is, because she has no sense of cars. my grandma would also think, that all planes look the same.

But, the tail section from A400M and the AN-70 totally differs, the engines also, the landing gear belly button is different too. not to forget the props. But of course, both planes have wings, some device to mix the air, and those wheels in the middle and the front. Yeah, maybe that makes it so hard to distingiush both planes for some people, like my grandma...

Being a boeing fan,i never knew that airbus would pull this one together...it really looks cool...i cant believe im saying this, but congrats airbus...well,we will see how it performs in the royal malaysian air force soon...

Different planes look similar because physics are the same since the Wright brothers' flight. Its not about copying or whatever, its about being efficient in one role or other, that's why all planes are not exactly the same....

This is a very nice shot. Thank you for posting it. But I have to ask, besides the A-330/340, why does Airbus find it necessary to build such ugly aircraft? Maybe Airbus needs a design lesson from their French brethren at Dassault! And for those that argue that they military needs efficiency and not style, may I remind you of the SR-71? - Brett

As in general in mechanical engineering an optical beautifull design with proper dimensions stands for good performance and I am happy to see this on the A400M
