The cockpit of the A380....my first ever upload of a cockpit picture and the first pic of the A380 cockpit. No idea what everything means, but it is certainly impressive! You can see the location of the aircraft by looking at the GPS on the EICAS and also a view of the aircraft from the tail camera view [Nikon D70]

Just because it is a similar background color doesn't make it any version of Windows, guys... It is proprietary Airbus software that is hopefully Unix/Linux based. You don't actually think they would use anything from Microsoft to control this bird, do you?

I think these round grayish things hold pointing devices (track balls). Front part of the tablet can be turned to cover the keyboard part. The tablet is probably stored directly under the cam screen. On the copilot's side you can see a shiny part, which should be the outer right of the tablet.

The WhaleJet runs on Windows OS? Oh-oh. Not good. Wouldn't like to be the pilot and have the computer freeze at FL360. "Ummm, ladies and gentlemen. It seems Windows has crashed..." or "Ladies and gentlemen, we have been flying in circles for the past 8 hours, due to some minor software problems with our Windows OS. We will stop when the new fix is downloaded and installed."...
Sheesh... apart from that slapstick humor, the cabin looks amazingly modern... Absolutely impressive.

Picture is excellent. If it is indeed some Microsoft OS on the flight deck, even if it does not control the aircraft, I am more worried about pilots being distracted by something not working and that is not what you want with 555 pax behind them.

On the international space station, they also have Windows machines also for non critical stuff, and the crew ends up spending much time fixing problems on those machines.

I can't believe Airbus would be stupid enough to put 2 Microsoft boxes in the cockpit. I would hope that Airbus make a very public statement about this denying there is any microsoft software in the cockpit otherwise the public will avoid that aircraft like the plague.

Perfect, now we can watch at CNN, ESPN, SPEED and MTV at the same time, the only thing missing is the popcorn machine, the others monitors is to see the games from different angles. What are those 2 balls where the throttle is ? HMMMMM maybe for those long flights???? Will they be able to see VENUS channel in there ???. Nice cockpit I will feel like a child in there a BRAVO to the engineers an designers and AIRBUS

The grey things in the middle looking like a pair of boobs is the trackball to move the cursor on the FMC.

Boeing is using a trackpad system, Airbus however preferes the trackball cause it should be more reliable during bad weather conditions ;-)

Great. Wide!

OK - other planes look similar already. Just the big screens on the side are bigger. And the keyboard is new. And yes, there is a lot of room to the sides. If wonder whether the pilots are abel to look out of the side windows without to leave their seats? ;-)

Maybe no pilots but software eengineers are flying. On route they have to work as a software developer ;-)

The "electronic flight bag" on the widescreens is running on Windows 2000. Jeppeson sells them - they've been on the 777 for a few years now - and they are Windows - but the more
stable and longer lived Win2000 is the OS.
Anonymous
Wow... Now the pilots can fly on Flight Simulator while are flying for real!! Beatiful!
Anonymous
Very cool even if it look that cross crew rating will play again with this bird! (a 320 pilot will handle it in less than a week).

A guy from Antananarivo, Madagascar
(lem@wanadoo.mg)

About the "windows" things: Electronic Flight Bags as they were installed on B777-300ER are made of 2 separated computer systems on each side of the cockpit, the master system being Linux and the second one Windows. They hold just some PDF like files (at least vectored graphics) and as a matter of safety you can still have the paper version with you while flying just in case...
So even if the 2 screen shows Win95 it's not an issue with safety as the flight controls units and FMS are made of wery different birds and OSes than your most stable public version of Linux

The clarity and perspective of the two seats (Position of the pilot and co-pilot).The details of practically ALL controls and instruments, probably 98%!
The "computer keyboard like" apparatuses for the left hand seat. The fearless demonstration of "secret" or "confidential" equipment and control features vis-à-vis the tough competition. A technical wonder.

Small spaces with lots of details are difficult to capture in a photo, this one is exceptionally good. I would suggest some lighting behind the photographer to get the pedals illuminated. Good job!

Very Hi-Tech.The pilot has what seems like a laptop in front of him.Possibly to bring up different menus on the screens.
No conventional steering wheels anymore.
These have been replaced with "sticks" just like fighter jets.

I have desperately searched for the missing yolk in the cockpit that a visitor from Canada is referring to in his comment. Are we talking about a yoke or is there perhaps somewhere a hidden oven in the cockpit where one could also fry eggs or so beside flying the Airbus?

Great Picture - but a bit worrying. What happens when the coffee gets spilled on it during turbulence? Dangerously reliant on software and electronics if you ask me. How do you fly it when the computers go down?

Great clear shot that has detail colour and perspective. I love the two people that can be seen out the right hand side of the front window. It shows just how huge the A380 is. Not gone on the joysticks, prefer the older conventions and is a bit too hi-tech for my liking. Agree with the comment that if the computers go down wheres the manual control? That said, fabulous advanded technology, a fantastic plane to be on and in the cockpit of!!

Its neat and not too crowded with all instrumentation neatly and compacted in placed. Pilot too can relax same with passengers in flight. An ordinary individual can probably fly it the way it looks. Like a video game..

Looks like the captain must be left handed to manage the stick. What if the co-pilot promoted to captain? Might have some degree of difficulty handling the stick control. It could have been perfect but with no coffee handler??

It's squared without distortion at the edges. Straight lines are straight. The illumination is even and there is no glare on the instrument screens or gauges. The displays show images. But, the right seatbelt does not match the left seatbelt. Then again, the cockpit kicks ass!

No ambidextrous joystick?, it's called pick a seat right/left it doesn't you can customize which lcd displays what. No cup holder?, you get up and kick back with a cup of joe with the cute stewardess as auto pilot technology can even land this big fat bird on its own.
