Cof cof cof...nice timing

At first glance it appears that the Jet has skidded on the runway and has a problem. Its just a picture of a jet getting pushed back and starting an engine.

New engine?

Whoargh, they're really going for it in the cockpit. Not only shooting out a tonnes of weird stuff from no 1 as it fires up, but also full elevator deflection as they check the full and free movement of the controls at the same time as the engine start. Take me to DFW! No time to waste!

What is that coming out of the engine? Is it smoke?

Looks like fuel but no ignition- fogging just a bit - better motor it awhile with fuel off to clear out the combustion chamber, or a nice bang when you get ignition

I see that quite often. That is Jet-A Vapors. The startup Bang just after this is usually loud. It's a cold start. ERJ's do it all the time

... just like the big radial engines from the 40's...

It's actually called torching. When a jet engine (an apu for that matter) shut down, there is some residual fuel vapor leftover,so on the engine start it ignites, creating this effect. I see it all the time as I fly around the country on the 320 and E190s.

Thats not torching, it is raw fuel due to no ignition, it comes out as a mist when no ignition due to an ingnition fault or maint "wet" motoring an engine. "Torching" is ignited fuel vapors- "fogging" is what we see here. And no this is not normal starting smoke for a JT8-219

Maybe they use Russian fuel?

Seems to happen quite often there, look at those kerosene stains on the ground... ;-)

The last thing you would want to do while standing behind that plane is to light a cigarette.

Interesting because it's a different, technical situation the a/c is in. would have been spectacular if visible fuel vapour had gone bang.

I've seen this before with CRJ 900's mesa airlines, once or twice, the fuel didn't go boom though when the engine finally started. Was kinda funny though as if there were any rampers behind it they would have gotten a lung full

Need for Speed "DRIFT"

I've never seen this before. Quite interesting, great catch. This is my favorite a/c to fly in. The two seat, isle, three seat config is just perfect for my wife and I. No third wheel sitting next to us.
