Aviation Photo #0969504 Ilyushin Il-62M - Cubana

Most of you already saw (and talked about) this arrival at Lisbon airport, and as I am lucky to have another frame made milliseconds later, I thought uploading it could help to understand it. As you can see the clamshell doors are fully deployed few seconds before positive touch down. This is SOP on the IL-62M, so that an air-brake effect can improve the stop of the aircraft. Remember that a IL-62 (all versions) hasn't powered flight controls, so all "moving parts" are controlled by direct cable links.

Very interesting picture! Wonder if they could use these reversers in flight for steep descents as well. Note the heavy duty "tail skid" Nice piece of rugged real life Russian engineering this aircraft.

Excellent picture with a lot of details and a very rare aircraft. Just as info: The reversers are deployed to increase thrust without increasing speed, because the engines take a long time to spool up in case of a late and sudden go-around, same with the BAe146/Avro RJ with their typical air brake system at the tail. Cheers!
