Aviation Photo #1554355 Tupolev Tu-154M - Dalavia - Far East Airways

[ Medium Large ]

Tu-154 is notorious for being tail-heavy when there are no passengers on board; certain precautions need to be taken to keep it balanced on the ground. This aircraft was tipped backwards onto its tail with a strong wind blast before a thunderstorm.

First officer:"captain we are over-rotating",
captain:"why,the engines are turned off"

Seems like it might have to do with that third engine back there. two have never really been a problem, but when you got 3 heavy engines in the back, and nothing up front, well... you got the picture.

First officer: "Rotate"
Captain: "Wait... dont we have to have airspeed before we rotate?"
First officer: "Umm Bob why aren't we off the runway yet?"
Captain: "I duno... but that baggage truck seems to be moving faster than us.."

"This is the captain speaking. We are trying to take off but we don't seem to be going up.so.... can any body tell me why the taxing aircraft are cruising while we're just sitting here!!?!?!?!?

To the poster before me - 727s actually had a very similar problem. I've seen many 727s pics nose up on the ground. A terrible flaw to a beautiful design. Both Tupolev and Boeing styles.

Interesting picture from an unusual angle. Looks like the captain rotated a bit early though.

You don't seem to understand - the aircraft was intentionally positioned for a close-up underbelly inspection ;-)

The Ilyushin next to it must be even more tail-heavy, with 4 engines at the rear!

This is the bad thing with this type of a configuration, too bad it a beautiful design too. 727 had same problem initially.

I hope there is no problem when landing this aircraft. Else it would have remain like this till the end of the runway!! Great shot!

"A visitor from Australia posted Fri July 17, 2009": You're right, the Ilyushin 62 in the background is even more tail heavy. That's why it has a fourth wheel at the tail to support it. That wheel is just hidden by the vehicle between the two aircrafts.

Nice angle!

The winds must have provided enough lift to tip it on its tail...

That's why rear engined planes (Tu-154, Il-62, B-727) are not in trend now.
