What is going on with all that speed tape?

Did it fly through a hailstorm?

Nah, just some minor 'dents' left over from last night's 'dancing on the wings' theme party in the hangars.

The 787 has known issues with paint peeling on the wings. Speed tape is used as a temporary fix.

Ahh, like this? Sitting on a window seat and watching the peal back would be somewhat interesting.
Can you point to other paint peeling reports? I could handle a strip or two, the whole wing? If they can't take
care of the paint and do that right, what else?

No its just the paint

I guess they spent all their money on that Skytrax 5 star rating rather than paint.

Can't blame the operator for this fault, the problem was made in USA and this airframe will be due for warranty repair. Same issue reported by all operators.

Wings are made in Japan.

It looks like it could be another Hainan to me.

Seen this multiple times when flying QR 787-8's in the past 12 months, but not to that extent. Kind of freaky to the uninformed

This issue occurs because UV light penetrates the white topcoat and degrades the adhesion of the primer with the composite surface. Boeing has asked the FAA to approve an intermediate UV blocking coat, above the primer but below the topcoat, to address the issue. Once that is approved, it will be applied to all 787's at their next repainting.
