What is going on with all that speed tape?

Did it fly through a hailstorm?

Nah, just some minor 'dents' left over from last night's 'dancing on the wings' theme party in the hangars.

The 787 has known issues with paint peeling on the wings. Speed tape is used as a temporary fix.

WOuld not get on that airplane. Paint peeling - who knows what else is peeling off?

I guess they spent all their money on that Skytrax 5 star rating rather than paint.

Seen this multiple times when flying QR 787-8's in the past 12 months, but not to that extent. Kind of freaky to the uninformed

Looks really trustworthy, Hainan Airlines they really try to save money HNA is in a really bad shape.

This issue occurs because UV light penetrates the white topcoat and degrades the adhesion of the primer with the composite surface. Boeing has asked the FAA to approve an intermediate UV blocking coat, above the primer but below the topcoat, to address the issue. Once that is approved, it will be applied to all 787's at their next repainting.
