I did the return trip from Queenstown to Mount Cook and then Christchurch in Mount Cook Airlines HS-748 ZK-CWJ on 21Aug1976. I had a Boarding Pass with Seat Allocation for a Window Seat at the rear of the aircraft. I wanted to take in-flight photos of the spectacular mountain scenery from the aircraft. I noticed passengers ‘stampeding’ when Boarding was Called on the PA system. When I boarded, all the back-end seats were occupied, including my Allocated Window Seat. The guy in my seat wouldn’t move, and the Air Hostesses (now known as Flight Attendants) just told me to take any empty seat. The Seat Allocations on Boarding Passes were routinely ignored! As a result, my Window View was limited to the side of a Dart engine, while the ‘gazumping’ people in the rear seats commented on the great scenery en-route to Mount Cook Airport. Finally, I wasn’t allowed off the plane at Mount Cook to photograph the aircraft with the namesake mountain in the background.
