The very first Ares 1 rocket, standing as tall as a 33-story skyscraper and 40 stories on top of the Mobile Launch Platform and Crawler Transporter, slowly emerges from the massive Vehicle Assembly Building as it rolls out to Launch Pad 39B for the first test flight, Ares 1-X, October 20 2009. If the program goes forward, Ares is the manned replacement for the shuttle and could take astronauts back to the moon eventually. Third tallest rocket in history it is just shy of the record 363-foot Saturn V.

Excellent photo by Mr. Cooper again. One can easily see where the SRB will be bundled in the future variant.

Amazing . . . proof that humans can accomplish anything if they put their minds together and work hard enough. 5*!

Clearly not as aesthetically pleasing as the old Saturn V but impressive regardless. This baby is going to be taking people back to the Moon...

Doesnt look like it will be able to carry much of a heavy load. I wonder if the non-testflight ones will have other boosters that jettison like on the space shuttle setup
