The splendor and beauty of a space shuttle cockpit all powered up! A data package was loaded that mimicked flight by spacecraft operator Bill to show the glass cockpit. Her Attitude Indicator and other systems are being driven hence are showing dynamic output. The two keyboards on the two side of the center console allow control of the multifunction CRT display system. The little toy orbiter marks the removal of the "T handle" that blew pyros for overhead egress. Thanks Bill and Jay!

Where is the fluffy dice and air freshener? What the heck is that toy on there for? A gentle reminder to the captain to what he is flying? Brilliant photo!

I like the "joy stick" in the center, future (video gamer pilots) should feel right at home. Wonder why Airbus doesn't do it this way. Are all captains left handed and first officers right handed?

It's exciting when you think that on take-off this cockpit is looking upwards and "pilots" lie on their backs.
And note the toy shuttle in the center of photo.

Still unbelievable that this here is the cockpit of a (powered) glider!!! Glad to have seen them get up and go during my lifetime...

Answering the question on what the toy shuttle is: It indicates the position of the handle that when pulled blows one of the overhead windows for emergency egress on the ground. The toy is put on top of the handle location.

Very envious of anyone that gets to pilot such a remarkable machine. Not envious of anyone that has to sit in those seats for any length of time. They look most uncomfortable indeed.
