Helge Ingstad (1899 - 2001) had a long and important connection to Canada. Among his many accomplishments, he and his wife Anne Stine found the proof of Viking settlement in North America at the northern tip of the Long Peninsula of Newfoundland. The site of that settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows is a National Historic Site of Canada and a World Heritage Site.He lived as a trapper in Canada for 4 years in the late 1920s and wrote the best selling book The Land of Feast and Famine about his adventures in the Northwest Territories. Ingstad Creek, just to the east of Great Slave Lake is named for him. That experience spurred his interest in aboriginal peoples and he set out to learn and write about Indians in Texas and Mexico and Inuit in Alaska. Helge Ingstad died in Oslo. He passed away on the 28th of March 2001 at the age of 101 years old.
