They are called "side-sticks", not joysticks. That is something you use on your computer.

Excellent photo it captures almost everything in the cockpit.. I think the box with the danger on it may be the jettison for the escape chute. its just my guess... but on fighter planes its yellow and black I'm not sure

Oh, great! the first thing I see when I look at this picture is the DANGER BOX - I'm all stimulated now by seeing that!

Does anybody know what the round mound like things are on the pedestal between the FMS keyboard and the comms panel??
My guess is hand hold or arm rest.

I am not 100% certain, however I believe that the "Danger" box contains an emergency STOP button; if a pilot- or any crew member for that matter- wishes to disembark midair it will bring the plane to a complete stop. This also happens when a passenger undoes their seat belt. The technology was provided by the same company that built the Batmobile ride at Movieworld. Marvelous technology- Bravo Airbus!

So what makes it that much better than the Boeing 747? ...then why is it 10X more complicated? I'm not feeling the side-sticks...looks like a simulator. Plus, I wouldn't want to be the captain if I'm right handed.

I would feel very, very comfortable in this cockpit. I'm very sad that my cockpit carrier is already coming to an end.
Thought these little round things on the central pedestal are used to warm the hands of the pilot and 1st officer!!

Great shoot! But guys, the "hand warmer" is a touch sensor, just like a computer mouse, to control the three electronic information panels above. All Displays are interchangable if necessary. Also there are no such things as a set up for right/left handed pilots. The right seat always flies with the right hand, even in conventional aircrafts!

Keep in mind that this is still an EXPERIMENTAL aircraft. While it's in flight testing, the DANGER box most likely houses an ejection seat trigger.

Also, all of the Airbus airliners use side sticks now. The flight controls on these planes are completely computerized and require a different "touch" than traditional flight controls: hence the sticks. As to Left hand vs. Right hand... you get used to it. In fact, you probably do more work in the cockpit with the hand that's NOT on the stick, so having the left hand on the stick is actually probably a better idea.

For a long ranger by definition, the seats don't look too comfortable, but given all the difficulties, the 380 development is fighting against, it may seem apropriate, to fit only standard seats.

Great shot Sam! Real insight into this new airliner. As for the comment below re flying 'left hand vs right hand' Its the same in any multi-crew aircraft, even the Boeings, how else are you going to have one hand on the yoke and one on the throttles! :-)
