This Halifax flew only one mission; four mines were dropped as intended, but the starboard engine was shot and it was forced to land on the frozen Lake Hoklingen in Norway belly up. The crew escaped but the aircraft caught fire, melting the ice, and it sank to the bottom of the lake. The aircraft remained there for 31 years until it was recovered by the RAF in 1973 [Nikon D3]
