Major Drew Hess (left seat) throws "Fat Albert" into a side slip before he dropped the nose into a steep dive to softly (the softest landing I have experienced in 34 years of flying) land at the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at Kennedy Space Center airshow. The black hash marks on the SLF are where the space shuttle aims for so it was fantastic coming in for high angle of attack approach and landing on Fat Albert Airlines at the home of the space shuttle program. "Fly Marines!"

What a moment to capture, really fine image. Just wondering though what the pilots made of the flash going off at such a critical moment...

This is great!!! I've done so many slip approaches by myself in small aircraft and I always wanted to see this with a big plane... great shot Suresh

Actually this a forward slip not a side slip, this is the type slip you use to lose altitude quickly, quite common in GA aircraft. Great to see proficient Marine pilots performing this manuever in a large aircraft like a C-130

^ to the poster above, many different countries and clubs have different names for slips...for example where I fly the slip for losing altitude is a forward slip, and the slip to maintain a track is a side slip...

Whatever you guys want to call it, they're still exceptionally better pilots than you, and they call it what they know it is. Probably nothing.
