Former PH-KCG stripped of most useful parts awaiting the axe. Such a shame to see an aircraft in this state...especially an MD11. By this time KLM has stopped flying the MD11 and thus ending commercial pax service of the type worldwide, sad.

I get a stomach ache when ever I see a proud aircraft in this sad state. Thank you for sharing the enjoyment and also the pain.

What a sad photo, but life goes on in the commercial world. It just goes on mainly powered by 2 engines instead of 3 and even 4 (747,A-340, and A-380) someday. I heard mention in the news that the last MD-11 to fly for the last time a couple days ago had either 85,000 cycles or flight time on the frame. Not sure which it was. I love the MD-11 and will miss it and all Douglas aircraft.

Sadly, what did the MD-11 in at many PAX airilines was what happened to Swissair Flight 111. No one wanted to spend the money to 'deal' with the Kapton-insulated wiring problem. The no. 2 engine was also a major PITA to service and the handling was also an issue in cross wind landings. The DC-10 was far better but it suffered early on with it's own issues too.

As a kid growing up, our neighbor retired from United Airlines as a DC-10 caption. He began his 30 plus year career as a pilot for United flying 727 and DC-8's before closing out on the DC-10. I remember him telling everyone how much he loved the feel of the DC-10,solid stable and very well built. He flew the -10 from Chicago west to California, Hawaii, and sometimes to Hong Kong and Japan. Like the MD-11 in this photo, the DC-10 and the -11 will be missed.

This really hurt to see. This is the painful, inevitable end of an era, one that many enjoyed and loved. Goodbye, trijets. May your legacy live on forever.
