On 24 & 25 June 1942, 4 of this A/C type removed my 49 shipmates and myself from barren & deserted Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. We, USS S27, had struck a rocky area in shallow water and settled on the bottom a few hundred yds off-shore. The big enemy base on Kiska Island was just over the horizon, so we hunkered down and laid low for 6 days until discovered by a PBY of Patrol Wing 4 based at Dutch Harbor AK. - George Herold
