Were the WW2 pilots crazy? Why would they mark their planes in such hi-visibility markings?

The nose colors identified the flying unit the aircraft belonged to, the black and white stripes informed it was an allied aircraft and, yes, the canopy was similar to a spitfire canopy, and for the same reason: improve pilot's visibility. It was called "Malcolm Hood"
