Royal Air Force Vulcan B1A XH480 orbits RAAF Laverton Airfield during the Air Display on 19Sep1965, rapidly filling my viewfinder and creating an 'Aluminium Overcast'!. Her low-level handling display was truly impressive. The four Olympus engines were working overtime to maintain this angle of bank. (Photo by Pentax S1A and Tamron 210mm Telephoto lens). XH480 is displaying the Waddington Wing station badge and squadron markings (No.44, 50 & 101Sqn) on its entrance door. Aircraft positively Identified as XH480 by Craig Bulman on 07Aug2012.

Great photograph of a great aircraft, XH480 was a Vulcan BMk1A that I helped crew to Australia for what used to be the Battle Of Britain air displays. The Captain was Sqn Ldr Ron Mudge and I was the Co-Pilot,. We set off from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire on the 4th of September 1965 in XA910 and flew via Akrotiri in Cyprus, Muharrraq in Bahrain and on to Gan in the Maldives. During this leg we had to shut an engine down which resulted in us taking the spare aircraft XH480 and continuing on to Tengah in Singapore and thence via Darwin to RAAF base Fairbairn in Canberra. This was during “confrontation” with Indonesia I seem to remember so we flew at night and as high as we could from Tengah to Darwin in case they weren’t happy with our filed flight plan!

Fly pasts took place over Canberra to persuade the inhabitants to attend and we displayed on the 12th September. We then flew on to Avalon to take part in the display at Laverton (it’s runway wasn’t long enough for us) These four photographs are of Ron displaying XH480 and, I hope, being ably assisted by his Co-Pilot

We must have been well looked after since I emigrated in 1978 and have lived in Western Australia ever since! The Britannia in Photograph 76 escorted us most of the time with groundcrew and spare parts.
