US domestic carrier Allegheny Airlines evolved to become US Airways as a result of numerous acquisitions (Lake Central, Mohawk, Piedmont, PSA…) that eventually comprised the biggest airline merger in history. Subsequent take-over by America West in 2005 (they retained the US Airways name) was followed by massive Airbus A320 & A330 orders and the company now has the largest Airbus fleet in the world. One of its 330s is seen here trailing spray as it lifts off from Manchester on a day of heavy rain.

In all actuality America West acquired US Airways. The US Airways name is more well known so it was kept.
