Strike Fighter Squadron EIGHTY SIX [VFA-86] 'Sidewinders' based at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, are operating this Hornet in a very weird colour scheme. The 'Sidewinders' made news while deployed in the Indian Ocean in 1979. It was during that time that VFA-86 spent 144 continuous days at sea following the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran.

I just want to expand on, and clarify, Mr. Plomitzer's remarks:
VA-86 (this squadron's designation, prior to transitioning to F/A-18s) was a part of CVW (Carrier Air Wing) 8 at the time of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Other squadrons that were a part of CVW-8 - and deployed on USS Nimitz (CVN-68) were: VAW-112 Golden Hawks, flying E-2B Hawkeyes; VF-41 Black Aces and VF-84 Jolly Rogers, flying F-14A Tomcats; VA-82 Marauders, operating A-7E Corsair IIs along with VA-86; VA-35 Black Cats with A-6E and KA-6D Intruders; VAQ-134 Garudas, flying EA-6B Prowlers; VS-24 Scouts, operating S-3A Vikings; HS-9 Sea Griffins, flying the SH-3H Sea King. Also embarked on Nimitz during parts of this cruise (departed Norfolk, VA on 10 September 1979; returned Norfolk 25 May 1980) were: VFP-63 Detachment 5, operating RF-8G Crusaders; VQ-1 Detachment Bravo, flying EA-3B Skywarriors; and HM-16 Seahawks, with RH-53D Sea Stallions. The eight helos of HM-16 were repainted Desert Brown onboard Nimitz, and were used in Operation Eagle Claw / Evening Light (the abortive hostage rescue attempt).
