United Airlines Livery

Tue Nov 19, 2024 1:54 am

If I understand correctly - post-merger United livery has been "standard globe," "wave," and "evolution blue"...right?

The superb fleet site does a really good job indicating which aircraft currently has which paint job, but the shorthand is a little confusing on top of how they don't link to examples? For example, "wave" is basically the same as "globe" but with a wavy line instead of straight...and was only applied to 737 MAX 9s and 787s? What's the difference between "EvoBlue/19," "EvoBlue/20," "EvoBlue/21," "EvoBlue/22," "EvoBlue/23," and "EvoBlue/24?"

Will most aircraft eventually be rebranded to "evolution blue?" Personally, this is my favorite out of all the post-merger livery - lettering and colors sort of remind me of pre-merger branding, "rising blue," etc. Diehard Tulip fan here!

Somewhat relatedly - will the onboard streaming systems and DirecTV be upgraded to AVOD throughout the fleet at some point or other? It seems like United had a change-of-heart when it came to prioritizing streaming video, as the "standard" for IFE.

I don't mean this offensively, but where have you been?

United announced they were adding seatback AVOD fleet-wide back in 2021. It's been discussed here at length and UA has marketed it pretty extensively.

DirecTV equipment will be removed and replaced with AVOD. Aircraft that only have streaming video will have seatback AVOD installed.

The two digits in your examples after EvoBlue represent the year the aircraft was painted.
That website is a little difficult to figure out, but they cram a ton of data into a very small space, so once you figure it out, there's quite a bit to it.

What’s the website for the UA fleet page again?

Streaming IFE to my laptop or mobile phone with headphones on and the volume turned too far up, no doubt. ;) I guess I would have expected it in more aircraft by now - seems as though the fleet of A319s, A320s, 73Gs, 738s, 739ERs, 739Ms, not to mention domestic 772s are still mostly all streaming.

Ahhhhh, I see - do you mean to say it's just a distinction of when it was painted, not a difference in color scheme? I thought I noticed some variance in tails, but I could be wrong... Definitely agree on not easily following a lot of their shorthand - "Slimline Sky" vs. "NEXT?" "RTS?" The seating configs make sense though - number of chairs for 1st vs. E+ vs. Economy.

Has anyone else noticed the “ribbon” is placed slightly different with Evo than on the CO gold 787 and MAX livery.

Is this due to that being Boeing house colors/style and the need for Evo to go on AB?

Otherwise I much prefer the aesthetic of the stripe/ribbon starting on the nose cone rather than below it.

The ribbon was pushed down compared to the previous MAX/787 livery- it now reaches no higher than the wing root while before it went up to the window line. Since the general shape was kept the same pushing it down means it starts lower on the nose and goes further back (reaches around just in front of tail cone, while before it was just behind rudder). This was done to make room for the larger titles on the fuselage, and so the nose cones would all be solid white which makes things nicer when they have to be replaced (don’t have to worry about slight misalignment of stripes on things painted at different times and different places).

I’ll also point out that in the old livery the ribbon only went through the nose cone on the 787. For the Max they purposely increased the downward angle at the front of the ribbon so that it avoided the nose cone entirely.

Ah, I hadn’t consider the complications of having it being included on the nose cone. That does make sense even if it doesn’t look as graceful

You folks are keying into what I was talking about, in terms of variance or styles only seen on certain aircraft types.

Is there a detailed breakdown of liveries and respective variants? Doesn't "EvoBlue" have some differences as well...perhaps in tail color?

No, there's only one EvoBlue livery. The posters are discussing the differences between the EvoBlue livery and the gold swoop livery found on some early delivery MAX 9s and 787s, referred to as "Wave" on the fleet site.

Aside from specials, United liveries can be grouped into the following categories:

The post-merger United/Continental hybrid livery with the gold globe and straight cheatline

The gold swoop/wave livery found on some early delivery MAX 9s and 787s

The EvoBlue livery now being rolled out to all aircraft

Good overview of the various liveries, including pmUA here

There's also a custom EvoBlue livery for N24988 and N27602.

Evoblue is the only good United livery since the orange red and blue cheatline

Please keep the thread on topic. We don't need to rehash livery decisions made a decade and a half ago. This thread is discussing the current liveries, so please don't derail it.
